Sage Usher: “My dream is to play in Israel”

Sage Usher is in Israel representing Canada at the Maccabiah Games. The 6″3 guard plays for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues in the Canadian University system, CIS and averaged 10 points last season while playing 30 minutes a game.

Let’s take a look at one of the great athletes that is playing here in Israel and his desire to stay here afterwards and turn pro in the Holy Land.

How does it feel to be representing Canada here in Israel at the Maccabiah Games?
It feels great as it’s an honor anytime that you’re able to represent your country on an international stage. I am very appreciative of this opportunity and know that it is one I will cherish moving forwards. This is my first time at the Maccabiah Games in Israel and it is truly special. I have done the Pan Am Games twice (Chile and Argentina) but those are not of the same magnitude as this event. The feeling while walking out at the opening ceremonies was definitely one I will never forget.

How familiar were you with your teammates prior to the Maccabiah?
I was familiar with about half the team as we played together at the Pan Am Games in Chile a year and a half ago. Other than that I was not too familiar with the others. We had a week long training camp before leaving for Israel and have also had a few practices here in preparation for the games.

What are your future aspirations?
I am still in school and plan on finishing my degree this year while leaving the option open to exercise my final year of basketball eligibility afterwards. After that I hope to come to Israel to play. Whether that involves making Aliyah or not, I definitely want to experience living and playing basketball over here. It has been a dream and goal of mine for quite some time.

Have you travelled to Israel with family? And if so who?
I have been here once prior for my Bar Mitzvah 9 years ago. My family and I toured the country and I remember bits and parts of that trip. However this experience has been a lot different and I have enjoyed it. I love it over here.
