Real Madrid sends Maccabi Tel Aviv to 1st home defeat 81-77

Real Madrid ended Maccabi Tel Aviv’s 10-game Euroleague home winning streak with a 81-77 victory. The Yellow & Blue and Los Blancos stayed neck and neck throughout the forty minutes of action but Anthony Randolph’s fantastic first quarter got things rolling, Walter Tavares was dominant in the paint and Facundo Campazzo’s court vision and composure was just enough for Pablo Laso’s squad to take the win. The no quit Maccabi didn’t give up as Scottie Wilbekin and Tyler Dorsey gave their team hope right until the end as time ran out,

Scottie Wilbekin led the way for Maccabi with 21 points while Quincy Acy and Tyler Dorsey each scored 9 points in the loss. Randolph dropped 19 points, Fabien Causeur and Trey Thompkins each scored a dozen points while Tavares added 12 points, pulled down 10 boards and blocked 5 shots and Campazzo chipped in with 10 points, 8 assists and 4 steals in the win,

Prior to the game a ceremony in memory of Kobe Bryant was held along with Maccabi running down the 24 second shot clock on the first possession while Real Madrid took an 8 second backcourt violation in Kobe’s honor as well.

Scottie Wilbekin hit a pair of triples to get the game underway but Anthony Randolph who was making his return from injury put down points early as well as Maccabi held an 11-9 lead midway through the first quarter. Randolph hit from the outside, Othello Hunter bested Walter Tavares in the paint, however, Fabien Casseur scored a number of layups to give Madrid a slim 21-19 advantage after ten minutes.

Aaron Jackson put down a basket, Deni Avdija hit a pair of free throws and Quincy Acy cleaned up an Avdija attempt to put Ioannis Sfairopoulos’s squad in front 25-21 with 6:50 remaining in the second quarter. Avidja and Jalen Reynolds scored layups it Jeffrey Taylor drained a triple and a layup as well to keep pace with the Yellow & Blue. Jordan Mickey and Trey Thompkins got to work for Real but Amare Stoudemire notched his first Euroleague points as Maccabi held onto the lead 38-36 at halftime.

Facundo Campazzo opened the third quarter with points and was followed by Causeur, Randolph and Tavares as Real jumped out to a 48-42 lead midway through the frame. Randolph continued the scoring outburst with a triple over the head of Acy and Gabriel Deck scored as well to send Real into the final frame up 57-49.

Wilbekin began the fourth quarter with a bang as he drained a 3-pointer and Jake Cohen hit a pair as well but points by Tavares, Trey Thompkins has Sergio Llull kept Real ahead 65-58 with 5:48 left in regulation time. Tavares once again scored an easy basket in the paint but Wilbekin and Acy scored from behind the arc to cut the Real lead to 68-66 as time began to wind down. Maccabi tired to keep the game tight But Campazzo hit a clutch triple and free throws to hand Real an 81-77 win.
