Maccabi Tel Aviv drops Barcelona 92-85 – Yellow & Blue avenge loss in Spain thanks to Dorsey, Wilbekin & Caloiaro

Maccabi Tel Aviv defeated Barcelona 92-85 thanks to sharp shooting from Scottie Wilbekin in first half and Tyler Dorsey in the second. But it was Angelo Caloiaro with a huge fourth quarter that led the Yellow & Blue to the victory. Nikola Mirotic hit a circus act shot to get things underway as the referees gave the former NBA Star plenty of respect early on with his defender Quincy Acy picking up two quick fouls to begin the game. But Maccabi recovered thanks to a pair of layups by Yovel Zoosman as the Yellow & Blue held an early 9-8 lead midway through the first quarter. Cory Higgins and Brandon Davies got hot as Scottie Wilbekin’s baskets couldn’t help Barcelona grab a 27-20 lead after ten minutes.

Tyler Dorsey and Jake Cohen got to work to open up the second quarter combining for 13 points as Maccabi took a 33-32 lead with 6:58 remaining in the half. Mirotic and Othello Hunter traded baskets while Deni Avdija hit a triple and Wilbekin scored the final seven points of the frame to give Maccabi a 48-41 advantage at halftime.

Mirotic began the third quarter just as he did the first with points from the corner while Victor Claver and Ante Tomic each scored a basket as Barcelona cut the Maccabi lead to 52-50 midway through the frame. Nate Wolters, Angelo Caloiaro and Dorsey all drilled home 3-pointers for Ioannis Sfairopoulos’s squad as they took a 65-57 lead into the final frame.

Dorsey hit back to back triples but Kyle Kuric, Mirotic and Pierre Oriola did as well to cut the Yellow & Blue lead to 71-68 with 6:30 left in regulation time. But an Aaron Jackson layup and seven straight points by Caloiaro extended the Maccabi lead to 84-72 with three minutes to go. However, Malcolm Delaney and Mirotic combined for a quick ten points to cut the lead to just 3-points, but Wilbekin scored from beyond the arc for his first points of the half and Hunter grabbed crucial rebounds plus scored 4 points to wrap up a 92-85 victory.
