Hapoel Haifa gets by Hapoel Jerusalem 85-78

Hapoel Haifa defeated Hapoel Jerusalem 85-78 as five Carmel Reds players scored in double-digits to notch the win. Guy Goodes’s squad controlled the pace of play from the get go and they built up an early lead and held on throughout the 40 minutes to pick up their 5th victory of the season while Ilias Kantzouris’s team lost their second straight Israeli league contest.

Mike McGuirl scored 18 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and dished out 8 assists, Amit Simhon scored 16 points as Jon Davis chipped in with 12 points in the win. Oz Blayzer scored 13 points while a trip of Jerusalem players scored 10 points in the loss.

“We have had some big games this season but we spoke about making sure that we play tough defense from the start of the game,” Goodes said following the win. “I am also very happy for Marcus Bingham to get a chance to play after being injured for the entire season and for the club and fans for winning this game and bringing some joy to the community.”

Marcus Bingham who made his league debut scored inside, while Amit Simhon and Jon Davis also found the basket for Hapoel Haifa early on but Levi Randolph, Or Cornelius and Zach Hankins answered, however, Gur Lavie’s deuce at the buzzer gave the hosts a 24-19 lead after ten minutes of play. Itay Moskovitch scored from the inside and the outside while Mike McGuirl filled the bucket as well for Guy Goodes’s team, Yovel Zoosman, Oz Blayzer and Cornilius cut into the lead for Ilias Kantzouris’s team but free throws by Amit Simhon helped Haifa take a 48-44 advantage into halftime.

Williams and Davis traded deuces, Blayzer and Lavi traded triples, Moskovitch and Davis went from deep while McGuirl added a bucket to give Haifa a 62-56 lead after thirty minutes of action. Juvonte Reddic started to score for Haifa to begin the fourth quarter, Zach Hankins responded, Lavi knocked down a corner 3-ball, Simhon went from downtown, Brynton Lemar dialed up long distance to try and keep Jerusalem close, but Simhon from the outside and Reddic on the inside to close out the game.
