We’re back: Elitzur Ramla returns to the EuroCup

Aug 14, 2024 | Holyland Hoops

The reigning Israeli League champions, Elitzur Ramla, is returning to the EuroCup Women’s competition for the 2024-25 rendition after withdrawing last season due to Swords of Iron War, which began with Hamas’s inhumane attack which consisted of massacres, abductions and rockets fired at Israel.

The competition will feature 12 groups with four teams in each group, for a total of 48 teams. The draw, which took place in Munich last month, put Ramla together in Group H together with Poland’s VBW Gdynia, Lithuania’s Kibirkstis Vilnius and Germany’s ALBA Berlin. With it being uncertain when European play will return to Israel, Ramla will play each of their home fixtures on their opponent’s court.

“We’re happy to announce our return to the EuroCup competition after a year’s absence,” the team announced on its social media account. “Since no international competition can be held in Israel at the moment, we will play all three of our home games at our rival.”

The European campaign will kick off with a “home” game against Kibirkstis in Lithuania on October 7, the first anniversary of Hamas’s Simchat Torah attack in which the terrorist organization led an attack in which they murdered 1,400 people and took 250 people hostage – 115 of whom are still being held in Gaza. With the effect that the war continues to have on the country, the game itself will be a significant event on Israeli basketball’s calendar for the 2024-25 season.

Both fans and players shared their excitement at Ramla’s return to Europe across social media.

“There is Europe for Ramla,” the official Instagram account of the team’s fans posted in an image – which was shared by players Jennie Simms and Ofir Lavy in their Instagram stories.

“The fans want to thank the team’s administration for their hard work, that time after time they prove which is the largest team in the history of this league. We are departing for an exciting journey despite the war. We hope to finish this season with three trophies [the Israeli League and the State Cup, as well as the EuroCup]!”

Ramla’s complete schedule for the EuroCup group stage, as announced by the team, is as follows:
• October 7, home game vs Kibirkstis in Lithuania.
• October 9, away game vs Kibirkstis in Lithuania.
• October 16, away game vs ALBA in Germany.
• October 22, home game vs Gdynia in Poland.
• October 24, away game vs Gdynia in Poland.
• November 21, home game vs ALBA (location to be confirmed).
