While the focus on Israeli women’s basketball is on the best of five finals series of the Athena Winner League – the Israeli Women’s Premier Basketball League – which Elitzur Ramla can sweep with a victory over Maccabi Bnot Ashdod tomorrow (Thursday) evening in Ashdod (19:00 IDT / 12:00 EDT), the national team is already looking ahead towards this summer’s 2023 EuroBasket tournament, which kicks off in the middle of June.
Earlier today, team announced its squad of 22 for the tournament, selected by head coach Sharon Druker, together with assistants Roee Lazare and Netanel Dayan, which features seven players who are currently playing in the Athena Winner League finals series: national team captain Eden Rotberg, Alyssa Baron, Jennifer Fleischer and Noor Kayuf for Elitzur Ramla; and Alex Cohen, Drew Edelman and Tal Sahar fpr Maccabi Bnot Ashdod.
American fans will be excited to see recently-naturalized Israeli Jennie Simms (Phoenix Mercury), as well as college players, Yarden Garzon (Indiana Hoosiers), Lior Garzon (Oklahoma State), Romi Levi (Auburn) and Emmi Rinat (Rhode Island) in the squad.
The squad also includes Daniel Karash (A.S. Ramat Hasharon), Eden Zipel (Hapoel Rishon LeZion), Hila Karsh (Hapoel Rishon LeZion), Daniel Raber (Elitzur Holon), Tslil Vaturi (Maccabi Ironi Ramat Gan), Gili Eisner (Maccabi Haifa), May Revahe (Maccabi Haifa), Hadar Hadad (Hapoel Petah Tikva), Tamar Bar Gal (ASA Jerusalem) and Shirel Nahum (Wingate Academy).
The team is expected to play five warmup games at the beginning of the summer, before playing its EuroBasket group games in Israel at the Drive In Arena in Tel Aviv, against Belgium (Thursday June 15), Italy (Friday June 16) and the Czech Republic (Sunday June 18).
