Maccabi Tel Aviv played stifling defense to defeat Fenerbahce 67-55 for their third win in a row. Coach Ioannis Sfairpoulos’s team held the visiting Turkish squad to just 21 first half points in a tremendous defensive display of the likes which haven’t been seen in Yad Eliyahu for years. Omri Casspi earned the MVP award with 13 points, Othello Hunter and Nate Wolters each chipped in with 10 points while Scottie Wilbekin added 9 points in the victory. Nando De Colo led Coach Zeljko Obradovic’s crew with 13 points as Derrick Williams and Bobby Dixon each added 11 points in the loss.
Scottie Wilbekin continued where he left off against Jerusalem and drilled home a deep contested triple to help Maccabi to an early 6-0 lead forcing Fenerbahce coach Zeljko Obradovic to call for a time out. Defense continued to rule the day over the balance of the first quarter as the Yellow & Blue grabbed a 12-6 advantage after ten minutes of play.
Wilbekin knocked down another 3-pointer, Othello Hunter scored on a outback and Omri Casspi punctuated a 16-6 run to go up 28-12 midway through the second quarter. A number of Tarik Black free throws and points from Wolters gave Maccabi a 41-21 lead at halftime against a Fenerbahce team that saw production from only Nando De Colo.
John DiBartolomeo joined the party with a 3-pointer out of the gate but Bobby Dixon and Derrick Williams each hit triples of their own to cut the Yellow & Blue lead to 47-32 with 5:12 remaining in the third quarter. Derrick Williams and Luigi Datome got hot with points of their own to pull Fenerbahce to within 11 points 52-41 after thirty minutes of action.
Dixon continued to chip away at the lead with another pair of triples while Zoosman and Casspi answered for Maccabi as Fenerbahce cut the lead to 59-54 with three minutes to go in regulation. But Black, Zoosman and Wolters came to the rescue to give Coach Ioannis Sfairpoulos’s squad the 67-55 win for the Yellow & Blue’s third Euroleague victory in a row.
