Israel stuns Japan in Davis Cup play

Israel surprised Japan in Davis Cup action at the Drive In Arena by mounting a huge comeback on day two of the matchup to take the 3-2 win advance to playoffs for a chance to feature in the Round of 16.

Japan grabbed a 1-0 lead when Sho Shimabukuro who is ranked 146th downed Yishai Oliel the world’s 470th ranked player 6-4, 7-6. However, the first day ended on a high as Daniel Cukierman ranked 372 defeated Shintaro Mochizuki ranked 193 1-6, 7-6, 6-2 to even the best of five series at 1-1.

Day two saw Ben McLachlan and Kaito Uesugi bested Daniel Cukierman and Edan Leshem 6-2, 7-6 in doubles action to go up 2-1. But in the reverse singles matches Cukierman defeated Sho Shimabukuro 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 and Yshai Oliel rebounded to drop Shintaro Mochizuki 2-6, 7-5, 6-0 sending Israel into the playoffs.
