Hapoel Tel Aviv drops Badalona, eyes 2nd place in EuroCup group

Jan 30, 2024 | Holyland Hoops

Hapoel Tel Aviv defeated Badalona 91-85 as six players finished in double digits in a game that also saw the return of J’Covan Brown and Jaylen Hoard who had been out with injuries over the past month. The Reds came out flying as Will Cummings, Xavier Munford, Dez Wells and Kyle Alexander dominated the Spaniards to bump their record up to 12-5 with one more regular season game remaining when they face Besiktas on the road in a neutral site next week. Should Danny Franco’s squad win their final game they will end the group stage in send place just behind Paris Basket.

Cummings scored 19 points, Munford added 16 points as Dez Wells and Brown each scored 12 points in the win. Andres Feliz scoffed 19 points and Shannon Evans chipped in with 12 points in the loss.

“We came to the game with a lot of players who returned from injuries,” Hapoel coach Danny Franco said. We played with a new roster. We didn’t know which team we would get as we came into a tough game in Spain, where historically Hapoel has not won very much. I’m happy, the players performed great, we have a special group and it’s a big win for us, but I’m not surprised that we’re a strong team. Next week we will go to Besiktas and we will give everything to win and end the regular season in second place. We have two league games this week, and we will have to deal with them first.”

The game MVP Will Cummings commented about the importance of defending in order to pick up the win, “Getting back to the basics and defending, we gave up too many points last week and we really came in with the focus to defend and not outscore teams.”

Tomer Ginat: A huge victory for us as a team, fun and important to have back some of the injured players who helped us a lot today. We are very happy about the victory today and tomorrow we are already concentrating on the next important tasks ahead of us.
