Ashram Stars with 4 Medals, Wolters joins Maccabi, Gianniotis in Rajkovic out & More! Weekend Review June 22-23, 2019

Linoy Ashram has been the hit of the European Games for Israel in Minsk, Belarus so far. The rhythmic gymnast collected four medals over two days of the competition bringing home two gold and two silver in fine fashion for the Blue & White.

After winning a silver medal in the All-Around on Saturday, Ashram won gold in ball and clubs while collecting a silver in ribbon. The 20-year old began the day finishing sixth in hoop but used her inner strength and motivation to take home two straight golds first in ball and then in hoop and finished her day with a silver.

“I didn’t begin the day well,” explained a jubilant Ashram. “But thanks to the help of my coaches I made a restart and I began began again from the beginning. I’m happy that I was able to get back to myself and performed by routines well to bring hime the medals. This competition will continue to give me experience and I’m happy that I was able to pass this test as best as possible.”

Maccabi Tel Aviv signs Nate Wolters after playing last season with Zalgiris. Wolters signed a 2-year deal and played in 28 Euroleague games averaging 22 minutes, 11 points and 3.8 assists per game.

Nate Wolters told the official website, “I can’t wait to play for Maccabi Tel Aviv. I’ve only heard great things about the organization and that they have the best fans in the world. I know that we will have a big season and I can’t wait for it to begin.”

Coach Ioannis Sfairopoulos also commented on his new guard, “After the season I spoke to the management and staff about bringing Nate Wolters on board. He’s a player that can help us both in terms of defense and shooting. He’s perfect for my style of play and plans ahead. I’m happy that we were able to sign him.”

Maccabi Tel Aviv FC

Maccabi Tel Aviv signed goalkeeper Andreas Gianniotis to a 3-year deal as Predrag Rajikovic departed for Stade de Reims in France. Rajko arrived at Maccabi Tel Aviv in time for their foray into the Champions League Group Stages in 2015 and left as a champion. Gianniotis made 13 appearances in all competitions for Olympiacos last season, guiding the team to the Europa League group stages.

The Israel U20 Team defeated the Czech Republic 83-68 on the final day of the Portugal tournament as warmup to the European Championships which will take place in Tel Aviv this July. Yam Madar led the scoring with 18 points while Deni Avdija finished with 14 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. On Saturday, Israel drubbed Belarus 94-67. Madar once again was the high scorer with 16 points, Noam Avivi 14 points and 7 rebounds while Avdija finished with 12 points. On Friday Israel fell to Portugal 93-89 in overtime as Avdija starred with 32 points for the Blue & White.

The Israel U25 squad dropped the Czech Republic 86-49 in a tune-up for the University Games in Napoli this July. Golan Gutt ended with 14 points, Rafi Menco added 13 points and Roman Sorkin chipped in with 10 points in the win at the Drive In.
