Maccabi Tel Aviv downed Hapoel Beer Sheva 2-1 thanks to an Eran Zahavi penalty deep into second half injury time as the VAR, Virtual Assistant Referee overturned a decision on the pitch leading to the spot kick and the yellow-and-blue win. Dor Peretz opened the scoring by heading home a Dan Bitton free kick to take a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute, but Majomed Sulemanov quickly drew the southern reds even at 1-1 by the 25th minute. However, Eran Zahavi scored the winner via a spot kick in the 112th minute to have Maccabi sew up the game and take the win.
“This was a great game,” Maccabi coach Aitor Karanka began. “It was one exceptional effort that the players put in. We played a very tough game just a few days after another matchup that was no less difficult. We were the better team in this game as well as the one against Maccabi Haifa.”
“We played well in the first half and we pressed well helping us to a number of chances in order to score at least more than one goal,” Beer Sheva coach Elyaniv Barda explained. “We gave up a goal on a set piece and that isn’t something that would usually happen to us.”
