Israel fell 4-1 to France in Nations League action and will now ready to face Italy on Monday as the blue-and-white are still searching for their first points. Ran Ben Shimon’s side played a tight first half and looked to draw even for most of the second but two late goals did in the Sabra squad as their record over to 0-3.
Following the game, Omri Glazer who conceded a poor goal in the opening minutes when the ball skipped through his hands and into the back of the net giving France an early 1-0 to put Israel in a hole from the get go. The Red Star keeper spoke about the error on the first goal and more about the team’s performance.
“It’s part of the profession,” Glazer began. “Being a goalkeeper is sometimes a very cruel job and starting a game with a mistake like that is not easy, it’s a big mistake and I take responsibility. I’ve never hid from taking responsibility, I’m my own biggest critic, but I had to pick myself up .There is nothing to do, it was in the 6th minute and there were still 90 minutes to play.”
“I wanted to be there for the guys, to do something big, to try and make the country happy in such difficult moments that we are going through. Unfortunately we didn’t win the game, but tomorrow is a new day. We will learn from everything, we have another game against Italy on Monday which is not easy at all but we will keep our heads up and continue forward.”
The keeper continued about the gam itself, “The team doesn’t have much time to work on the field, it’s a lot of tactical preparations and meetings, Ran and the staff prepared us in an amazing way. Throughout the game we knew what we wanted from ourselves and until the 85th minute we were in a situation where we were still in the game. We talked in the dressing room at halftime that we want to keep the result as is and try to make some offensive substitutions and gamble a little.”
“In the end it came down to us and we won’t apologize for a moment, we wanted to get points and it was the moment to bet on ourselves but then we conceded two goals. Of course it’s unpleasant to lose 4-1, but for me losing 2-1 or 4-1 doesn’t really matter because we want to leave with points and not with compliments.”
About the Italy game coming up, “We are in a group with three of the best teams in the world, but I think we really showed that we can play against them. True, we are missing some players, but we don’t deal with that and only with who is available. We try to show positive, attacking football, take the initiative and not necessarily try to wait from the back and pray for a good result. Sometimes the results are not the way we want, we try to get through as a team. This is a new team and we always believe in ourselves.”
Israel, who is in League A will most probably move back down to League B and be relegated due to the results, “We were in the B league, we won and were promoted to A. It’s true that it’s not easy, but in order to reach the levels that we want to and to qualify for a big tournament, we have to experience these types of tough moments. we are learning from everything and there will also be mistakes. In the future we want to be a team that knows what it wants from itself, not one that comes to just defend. We are learning from this journey and want to move forward.”
