Weisz propels Haifa to key Europe Cup win, Holon falls and heads to Play In, Herzliya knocked out of BCL

Hapoel Haifa slipped by Levice 93-91 in a tight game that saw Spencer Weisz hit big basket after big basket down the stretch to move their FIBA Europe Cup second round record to 2-0. Six Carmel Reds players finished the game in doubt digits but it was Weisz who dropped a trio of triples in the final frame with the last one giving Sharon Drucker’s team the lead for good to take the close win.

Weiss led the way with 21 points while going 5/6 from downtown, Shawn Jones added 16 points and Anthony Hickey scored 13 points and handed out 10 assists in the win Miha Lapornik scored 27 points and Tre McCallum added 10 points in the loss.

Game MVP Spencer Weisz spoke about the victory following the game, “It was an important road win for us tonight. We buckled down late and had some crucial stops on defense and hit some critical shots on offense. A game like this tested our character and can help us in the long run.”

Bnei Herzliya was eliminated from Champions League play after coming up short against Peristeri 90-87 in Hadera. Oren Aharoni’s squad went into the fourth quarter nursing a slim 68-67 lead, but Vasilis Spanoulis’s team outplayed the hosts in the frame final to take the win and end Herzliya’s continental campaign.

Maurice Kemp led all scorers with 32 points, Stephen Thompson added 16 points, Chris Babb scored 14 points and Julian Gamble chipped in with 13 points in the loss. Marcus Denmon paced the visitors with 25 points, Sylvain Francisco added 21 points and Miro Bilan scored 15 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

“It’s frustrating because we thought we had it,” Herzliya coach Oren Aharoni began.
“We played tight but Peristeri made some big baskets but we missed some crucial free throws down the stretch. This is the first time we played in the BCL and we are proud of how we played but unfortunately we were missing something to take the win.”

“It was a great game and approached it the right way and prepared and practiced well,” Peristeri coach Vasilis Spanoulis said. “It was our first do or die game and we reacted at a very high level for a new team. We have ambitious guys and new guys. Herzliya was in good shape and we expected a tough game, but we reacted well.”

Maurice Kemp also looked back at the game that was, “It’s a tough one and a loss that stings. We made some mental mistakes and lapses. We played really hard and we have nothing to be ashamed of. I thought we could go far with this team in the competition but we will now shift our focus to the Israeli league. We got some veteran guys and that is where our leadership will come in, we will turn things around.”

Hapoel Holon fell to Oostende 95-86 in overtime as they will now have to participate in the Round of 16 Play In Playoff for a place in the second round of Champions League action. Should Guy Goodes’s squad have come away with the win, they would have finished the first group stage in the top spot and earn an automatic bye to the Round of 16 but will now have to ready for the best of 3 Play In where they will have home court advantage.

After a back and forth game for four quarters of play, the hosts began to pull away in the extra session with Breein Tyree setting the tone in the victory.

Marvin Jones paced Holon with 19 points, Erick Green added 18 points and Joe Ragland scored 14 points and dished out 11 assists in the defeat. Tyree starred with 31 points and Harris Bratanovic scored 18 points in the win.

“We lost the game on the defensive end,” Goodes began. “They took 14 offensive rebounds and they translated that into 16 points,. We let them score 25 points in the last five minutes of the 4th quarter. Tyree dominated the game offensively and made some plays and we couldn’t handle him.”

Shawn Dawson who scored 11 points also reflected on the game, “It was a very tough game and it was important for us to go straight to the top 16. We knew that it wasn’t going to be an easy job. We fought, didn’t play good enough on defense and they made big shots and big plays. Tyree was amazing and we didn’t get the win. We will go to the Play In and try to do what we can do from there.”
