Recap: Israeli Basketball Teams in European play

Milano defeated Maccabi Tel Aviv 92-88 in a hard flight entertaining battle in Italy. The loss broke the Yellow & Blue’s 6 game Euroleague winning streak as they will now look ahead to a date later this week with Barcelona. During halftime, Milano honored one of the all time Italian basketball greats, Dino Meneghin with a stirring ceremony as Maccabi Tel Aviv chairman Shimon Mizrahi presented Meneghin with a memento for the occasion.

The two squads put on an entertaining show for the fans which included over 200 Maccabi supporters with back and forth play throughout the 40 minutes. Scottie Wilbekin led all scorers with 25 points that’s in part to six 3-pointers, Tyler Dorsey added 14 points and Tarik Black chipped in with 13 points and 9 rebounds. Luis Scola was the top scorer for Milano with 20 points, Sergio Rodriguez clocked in with 18 points and 11 assists and Vladimir Micov had 13 points on the night.

Maccabi Tel Aviv fell to Barcelona in Spain 96-73 as the Yellow & Blue have now lost their last two Euroleague games. Ioannis Sfairopoulos’s squad went into halftime with a 3-point 46-43 lead, but a 31-point 3rd quarter with Nikola Mirotic and Cory Higgins leading the way helped Barca to the victory. Tyler Dorsey was the Maccabi high scorer with 15 points while captain John Dibartolomeo added 13 points which all came in the second quarter in the loss. Mirotić led Barcelona with 25 points and 14 rebounds and Higgins chipped with 15 points in the victory.

Nes Tziona was the only Israeli team to record a victory in European play this past week as they defeated Keravnos 85-74 to advance to the second round of FIBA Europe Cup play. Raviv Limonad led the way with 20 points and 8 assists, Jeff Withey added 15 points and 9 rebounds while Jeremy Hollowell and Corey Fisher each clocked in with 14 points a piece.

Hapoel Jerusalem came up short 91-84 to San Pablo Burgos in Spain as the Reds have now lost two Champions League games in a row. Down for most of the game, the hosts totally dominated the boards 51-27 leaving coach Oded Katash with very little chance to win. J’Covan Brown led the way with 22 points, but went only 1/7 from beyond the arc while Tashawn Thomas added 18 points in the defeat.

Hapoel Holon fell at home 94-92 to Dinamo Sassari and Curtis Jerrells in Champions League action. Marcis Foster once again led the Holon with 23 points and Guy Pnini scored 20 points in the loss.

Maccabi Rishon Le’Zion was officially eliminated from Eurocup action as they lost to AS Monaco 77-75. Jordan Swing was Rishon’s top scorer with 19 points and Johnathan Williams clocked in with a 15 point, 11 rebound double double for Guy Goodes’s squad.
