Obasohan paces Jerusalem in Halperin’s debut win, Gilboa sinks Eilat

Hapoel Jerusalem downed Hapoel Holon in convincing fashion 104-84 to hand interim head coach Yotam Halperin a win in his debut on the sidelines. The Reds came out strong as Retin Obasohan scored at will over the first ten minutes to set the tone for the game as five players finished in double digits and hit 17/32 for 53% from downtown to cruise to the 20-point victory.

Obasohan led the way with 30 points and 8 assists, Amit Gershon and Jalen Adams added 16 points each while Anthony Bennett scored 14 points and Itay Segev chipped in with 10 points in the win. Joe Ragland scored 20 points, Steven Gray added 16 points and Rafi Menco scored 12 points in the defeat.

Retin Obasohan came out like a house on fire as the Hapoel Jerusalem guard hit a triple, put down a dunk and then hit a jumper but Steven Gray went from deep as did Rafi Menco and Joe Ragland as the hosts held a 14-11 lead midway through the first quarter. Menco and Amit Gershon traded 3-pointers, Gray hit a jump shot on the baseline, Frederic Bourdillon scored a triple from the corner. But Gershon sliced through the paint for a layup and added more points from beyond the arc to give Yotam Halperin’s team a 30-21 lead after ten minutes of play.

Sean Kilpatrick and Anthony Bennett each went from downtown while Mark Ogden and Ragland countered for Maurizio Buscaglia’s squad but Bennett scored another pair of triples and a put-back to bump the Reds lead up to 46-30 with 6:17 left in the second quarter. Kaiser Gates put in a corner 3-ball, Michale Kyser and Ragland scored at the other end while Bourdillon drilled home a 3-pointer. Chris Johnson scored a pair of buckets in the paint for his first points of the night, Kyser added a pair as well as Ragland while Menco went from deep to cut the Jerusalem lead to 57-52.

Bennett began the the third quarter by dialling up long distance, Ragland and Johnson did the same at the other end but Segev put down a dunk and Obasohan hit a comer 3-pointer to keep Jerusalem in front 65-60 midway through the frame. Segev put points in the paint, Jalen Adams hit a jumper and Willy Workman put in a pair of layups but Guy Pnini scored a 3-pointer to keep Holon hanging around but down 74-66 after thirty minutes of action.

Adams opened the fourth quarter with points inside and outside of the arc while Niv Misgav went from deep but Halperin’s team continued to lead 82-71 with 6:46 remaining in regulation time. Gray scored a layup and one, Gershon came back with a 3-pointer as did Gates and Obasohan scored as well to widen the gap to 92-79 with 4:37 left in the final frame. Gray went from downtown but Adams came right back and Obasohan hit yet another 3-pointer to sew up the win for Jerusalem.

Hapoel Gilboa Galil sunk Hapoel Eilat 94-86 up north as Sacha Killeya-Jones and Derek Cooke paced the hosts with 20 points a piece to notch the victory at Gan Ner. Guy Kaplan’s squad grabbed the early lead and never relinquished it as Cooke who was making his debut filled the basket with dunks a plenty to help Gilboa to the win. Ronnie Harrell added 17 points and Michael Brisker chipped in with 12 points in the victory while Romello White with 22 points and Juston Patton with 19 points led Ariel Beit Halachmi’s team.
