Moskovich leads Galil Elyon over Kiryat Ata, Weisz’s key baskets help Haifa down Gilboa

Dec 11, 2022 | Holyland Hoops

Hapoel Galil Elyon outlasted Kiryat Ata 98-94 as up and coming Itay Moskovich starred in a thriller up north. Eleven players scored in double digits in game that saw the hosts jump out to a first quarter lead but the Galilee team came back to take a 44-39 lead at halftime. From there Barak Peleg’s squad made sure to stay in front with superb play by Moskovich with key baskets and clutch free throws to square away the win.

Moskovich led all scorers with 23 points, Jalen Hudson added 22 points and 9 rebounds, Bryce Washington scored 15 points and pulled down 9 boards while Deihsuan Booker added 13 points and 9 assists in the win. Chavaughn Lewis paced the hosts with 22 points, Michael Brisker chipped in with 16 points and Juvonte Reddic scored 15 points in the defeat.

“We aren’t a good defensive team dn we have plenty to do,” Galil Elyon coach Barak Peleg said. “We have to integrate Wayne Langston into the team and we will have more balance. It’s a lot easier to fix things up after a win, but we believe in what we are doing and even when we lose there is a process and we are working hard.”

“We didn’t defend well enough and to give up 98 points at home is way too much,” Kiryat Ata bench boss Shlomi Avrahami said. “The wins that we had we kept the point total to about 70 and this just wasn’t enough. We didn’t; come into the game wirth teh right energy and we could have taken a big elad but we weren’t able to.”

Deishuan Booker spoke about the win, “It’s been about 3 weeks since we got a win so it’s good to be back on that side of things. I’ll take the ugly wins over the pretty loses. Itay had a hell of a day man. Made some big shots and played with confidence. I love it. Now he messed up cause I’m not accepting anything less for him.”

Hapoel Haifa just slipped by Hapoel Gilboa Galil 82-80 as an active Spencer Weisz hit a number of big shots down the stretch to help the Carmel Reds record the victory and move to 4-3 while Gilboa drops to 2-7 on the season.

Anthony Hickey and Shawn Jones were dominant in the first quarter for Hapoel Haifa, but Payton Willis and Rashard Odomes came right back for Hapoel Gilboa Galil in the second period to cut the lead to 39-37 at halftime. Kadeem Allen and Spencer Weisz began to extend the lead once again but London Perrantes and Juston Gorham kept the visitors hanging around, but Weisz came up big down the stretch for Sharon Drucker’s squad as the Carmel Reds took the win.

Jones led the way with 18 points, Allen and Hickey each scored 16 points while Weisz added 12 points in the win. Odomes scored 20 points, Willis added 18 points while Gorham and Perrantes each scored 16 points in the loss.

“What pressure,” Drucker exclaimed. “The league is crazy, every game is something else. It doesn’t matter what place a team is in, they all come and play. I am happy that we won the game and now we have Europe on Wednesday and Nes Ziona on Saturday. We showed character and toughness in this win.”

“We were missing some defense and we came up short,” Gilboa coach Rami Hadar said. “We have to keep working. We are defending better and we are battling and look more like a basketball team than we did in the first game.”

Spencer Weisz also spoke about the game, “It was a big win for us against an aggressive and tough team. We knew it would be a dog fight for 40 minutes and I’m proud of the guys for sticking together in the tough moments down the stretch.”
