Maccabi Tel Aviv overwhelmed by Baskonia to drop second straight in Euroleague play

Maccabi Tel Aviv fell to Baskonia 92-82 as the yellow-and-blue were swept in the Euroleague Spanish double week having fallen at Real Madrid earlier in the week as their record dropped to 13-12 on the season. Oded Katash’s team came out scoring at will with Wade Baldwin doing the damage, however, the second quarter was all Baskonia as Markus Howard went off for 18 points in the period and give the hosts the lead that they would never relinquish.

Baldwin scored 25 points while Josh Nebo and Jasiel Rivero added 12 points each in the loss. Howard scored 26 points, Chima Moneke chipped in with 15 points and Vanka Marinkovic scored 14 points in the win.

“We came back into the game but it was really too late,” Katash said. “We didn’t deserve to win this game. We were not aggressive enough, a lot of mistakes and we didn’t execute our game plan. We didn’t use fouls, that way you can;t win games and we have to learn from this.”

Bonzie Colson and Josh Nebo got busy for Maccabi Tel Aviv to begin the first quarter, Maik Kotsar and Codi Miller-McIntyre came back with points for Baskonia, Wade Baldwin went from the outside and inside, James Webb put in a 3-point play and knocked down a triple to help the yellow-and-blue to a 26-20 lead after ten minutes of play.

Chima Moneke and Markus Howard scored for the hosts, Baldwin answered, Jasiel Rivero found points in the paint with a pair of buckets, as Howard kept filling the basket from every spot on the floor as Dusko Ivanovic’s squad grabbed a 39-35 lead midway through the second quarter. Kotsar scored a pair of baskets, Howard went from deep, Moneke scored inside, Baldwin and Brown came back with points as did Nebo to keep Oded Katash’s team within striking distance but down 54-47 at halftime.

Jordan Theodore and Nikos Rogkavopoulos scored to open up the third quarter, Webb came back with points, Moneke scored, Howard went from deep, Rivero responded on the inside while Tamir Blatt went from the outside but the hosts continued to lead 63-53 after thirty minutes of action.

Antonius Cleveland and Rogkavopoulos traded buckets, Vanja Marinkovic dialed up long distance, Roman Sorkin found the bottom of the basket, Rivero and Nebo scored, Baldwin added a 3-pointer but 10-points would be as close as Maccabi would get as Baskonia took the 92-82 win.
