Maccabi Tel Aviv drops Holon in Overtime thriller 87-85; advance to State Cup Final

Maccabi Tel Aviv just got by Hapoel Holon 87-85 in an overtime thriller to advance to the State Cup finals where they will face Maccabi Rishon Le’Zion. The Yellow & Blue were down 67-50 in the fourth quarter and mounted a huge comeback due to clutch play from Oz Blazyer to tie the game up at 72-72 and send the contest into an extra session. Blayzer and Yovel Zoosman scored down the stretch to stun Holon and snatch the win from the jaws of defeat.

Oz Blayzer led the way with 19 points, Scottie Wilbekin added 15 points and Yovel Zoosman scored 13 points in the win. Tyrus McGee scored 21 points, CJ Harris notched 18 points and Guy Pnini chipped in with 17 points in the loss.

Chris Johnson got the processing’s underway with a triple for Holon but Ante Zizic scored inside for Maccabi Tel Aviv while Yovel Zoosman and Elijah Bryant added 3-pointers to take an early 11-3 first quarter lead. Tyrus McGee put home a dunk, Isaiah Miles scored from downtown and McGee added a 3-point play for Stefanos Dedas’s team while Angelo Caloiaro jammed the ball home but Guy Pnini hit a corner triple to end the frame down 20-18.

Oz Blayzer scored the first points of the second quarter but McGee came right back with a 3-pointer while CJ Harris and Miles added points to stay within a bucket of the Yellow & Blue 27-25 with 5:09 left in the first half. Workman scored a layup at one end, Zizic powered home points in the paint at the other, Pnini went to work for Holon with a pair of triples to go ahead 36-31 but Bryant with a floater and Hunter off the backboard cut the advantage to just a point, 36-35 at halftime.

Pnini continued with the hot hand with his fourth 3-pointer of the game to open up the second half while Harris added another from long distance as a well layup to take a 44-38 lead midway through the second quarter. Miles and Harris went from deep, McGee added a layup to put Holon ahead 53-38, Scottie Wilbekin and Harris traded triples but Blayzer and John DiBartolomeo cut the Holon lead to 61-50 after thirty minutes of action.

Miles found nothing but net from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter, Bryant answered with one of his own before fouling out as Holon remained in the lead 67-58 with 4:16 left in regulation time. Zoosman drilled home a corner triple, Blazyer put in a 3-point play, Wilbekin scored a trio of free throws to cut the lead all the way down to 72-70 with 2:16 to go. Wilbekin hit a turnaround jumper in the lane to tie the game up but missed the last second shot as the game went into overtime.

Blazyer began the extra session with a 3-point play and then scored a jumper in the paint, while Zoosman with a putback and free throws to take a 82-77 lead. McGee hit a pair of free throws but Zoosman scored a turnaround jumper in the paint as John DiBartolomeo drained his shots from the charity stripe to seal the 87-85 win.
