Maccabi Tel Aviv crushes Barcelona 85-68 in dominating fashion to win 4th in a row

Maccabi Tel Aviv ran all over Barcelona 85-68 as the Yellow & Blue won their 4th Euroleague game in a row in dominant fashion. Ioannis Sfairopoulos’s squad came our flying in the first frame as MVP Scottie Wilbekin, Derrick Williams and Jalen Reynolds did as they pleased against Sarunas Jasikevicius’s team to set the stage. From there James Nunnally and Ante Zizic joined the party as each of the five players scored in double digits for the blowout victory.

With the win Maccabi moves their record to 5-2 on the season as they ready for a tough month ahead with visits to Baskonia, CSKA Moscow and Olympiacos on tap.

Nunnally led the scoring for Maccabi with 17 points, Wilbekin added 16 points, while Williams chipped in with 12 points and Jalen Reynolds along with Ante Zizic scored 10 points a piece. Cory Higgins paced Barcelona with 20 points and Nikola Mirotic added 17 points in the loss.

Kameron Taylor and Nikola Mitrovic traded triples to get the first quarter underway while Keenan Evans and Nick Calathes each scored a bucket a piece early on. Kyle Kuric went from deep and Cory Higgins scored inside but Taylor and Scottie Wilbekin kept Maccabi Tel Aviv in the lead 11-10 early on.

Evans fed Ante Zizic for an alley-oop, Derrick Williams added points as did James Nunnally but Rokas Jokubaitis hit an off balance shot, however, Jalen Reynolds scored from the top of key and Williams put more points in as the Yellow & Blue jumped in front 21-14.

Higgins and Jokubaitis cut into the advantage but Williams and Reynolds once again held down the fort from the inside and the outside while Wilbekin drilled home a triple to end the frame with a 31-18 advantage.

Nunnally cut through the paint for a bucket, Calathes scored a corner 3-pointer, Roman Sorkin added a bucket for Ioannis Sfairopoulos’s squad while Evans drained a triple to bump up the lead to 40-21 with 6:47 left in the second quarter. Mirotic came back out of the timeout and scored from beyond the arc, Nunnally matched him at the other end and Taylor put in a terrific bucket as Maccabi continued to run circles around Sarunas Jasikevicius’s team.

Brandon Davies scored his first points of the game for Barcelona. Williams fed Zizic for a dunk but Higgins scored a jumper at the other end as the hosts stayed up 47-30 with 3:05 remaining in the first half. Higgins continued to fill the basket but so did Nunnally and Zizic as the frantic scoring pace continued sending Maccabi into halftime in full control of the game 56-36.

Mirotic opened the third quarter with a pair of 3-pointers while Davies added points inside to quickly cut the deficit to 56-44. Angelo Caloiaro broke the 8-0 run with a basket inside, Calathes answered at the other end but Scottie Wilbekin nailed a corner 3-pointer to keep the lead at 62-46 midway through the period. Higgins dialled up long distance, Mirotic put in free throws, Reynolds powered in points for Maccabi but Higgins did as well to cut the lead to 65-54 after thirty minutes of action.

Reynolds scored to begin the fourth quarter, Nunnally drilled a triple but Nicolas Laprovittola put in a reverse layup and Calathes scored an uncontested layup, however, Wilbekin hit a runner to keep Maccabi in the lead 74-58 with 5:43 left in the final frame. Zizic scored in the paint, Wilbekin scored a left handed runner, Williams scored an off balance shot, Evans added points as did Nunnally to run away with the 17-point win.
