Maccabi Haifa and Villarreal played to a goalless draw in UEFA Europa League action as the sides split the points.
“We feel good,” Greens coach Messay Dego said. “I think that if we had a bit more belief we could have scored a goal. We played on a difficult pitch against a quality side. I am not someone to give up on any single game from the outset as we are Maccabi Haifa. We came to win and I told the guys that we are representing the club and the fans who are watching back at home. Next week we have an important game in Greece and we will do everything to win.”
Beitar slipped by Hapoel 1-0 in the Jerusalem Derby as second half substitute Yarden Shua scored off a nice give and go with Trazie Thomas to take the 3-points. Eylon Almog scored to give the southern reds a 1-0 lead before the break, but Gaby Jouri and Sahar Tagi found the back of the goal over the course of the second half to snatch the 3-points for the visitors.
“We came here to do our job which is what we did despite not playing well,” Beitar coach Yossi Abuksis said. “We didn’t deserve to win but due to the way we battled we did. We tried to press them in the first half, but their front line really caused us issues. Inserting Yarden Shua and Ofir Kriaff really helped.”
“We just couldn’t score,” Hapoel coach Ziv Arie explained. “That is why we love this game. Even if we would have drawn I would have been upset as we did anything that we wanted to with the ball. We knew that they were dangerous on transition and we gave them a gift.”
Bnei Sakhnin stunned Hapoel Beer Sheva 2-1 with a pair of second half goals to take the win.
“We should have been up 2-0 or 3-0 in the first half after creating so many chances,” Beer Sheva coach Elyaniv Barda said. “It’s just one of those funks that we are in and we have to find a way out of it which we can by winning. We should have won this game and we are leaving with a loss.”
“We could have really gone down in the first half,” Sakhnin coach Slobodan Drapic said. “They were dominant in the first half but then we started to play much better. We deserved to win and we can smile a bit as well.”
