Maccabi falls to Shakhtar 2-0: Solomon, Dabbur, Zahavi and Refaelov all with busy games

Maccabi Tel Aviv were blanked by Shakhtar Donetsk 2-0 in Europa League Round of 32 first leg action at Bloomfield Stadium. Alan Patrick scored in the first half while Tete found the back of the goal off a counter attack in the 93rd minute to hand the Ukrainian squad which features Israeli starlet Manor Solomon the victory. “We saw how strong Maccabi are as a team, so nothing is finished,” said Solomon. “It was fun coming to play at home and I was very excited. My mother’s family are Maccabi fans, but tonight I want to believe they cheered for us.”

Head Coach Patrick van Leeuwen also reflected on the game, “We knew it would be a hard match against a difficult opponent. We felt we could get more from it. We will be better prepared for the next match.”

The Yellow & Blue will play the return leg in Kiev next Thursday and will have a tough hill to climb after conceding two away goals in Israel.

In other Europa League action, Monas Dabbur scored a pair of goals and added an assist in Hoffenheim’s 3-3 draw with Molde, however, the Israeli striker missed a critical penalty which denied him not only a hat-trick but the victory. The game was an away match for Molde that tool place in Villarreal which will give the German club three away goals as they ready for the 2nd leg.

Lior Refaelov scored a penalty and added a pair of assists for Antwerp, but the Belgian squad fell to Rangers 4-3 on a 90th minute penalty.

Eran Zahavi scored a brace for PSV but it wasn’t enough in a 4-2 loss to Olympiacos.
