Maccabi Tel Aviv were blanked by Shakhtar Donetsk 2-0 in Europa League Round of 32 first leg action at Bloomfield Stadium. Alan Patrick scored in the first half while Tete found the back of the goal off a counter attack in the 93rd minute to hand the Ukrainian squad which features Israeli starlet Manor Solomon the victory. “We saw how strong Maccabi are as a team, so nothing is finished,” said Solomon. “It was fun coming to play at home and I was very excited. My mother’s family are Maccabi fans, but tonight I want to believe they cheered for us.”
Head Coach Patrick van Leeuwen also reflected on the game, “We knew it would be a hard match against a difficult opponent. We felt we could get more from it. We will be better prepared for the next match.”
The Yellow & Blue will play the return leg in Kiev next Thursday and will have a tough hill to climb after conceding two away goals in Israel.
