Maccabi Tel Aviv fell to Monaco 86-67 as the hosts went on a 15-0 run to begin the final frame to take the win. With Oded Katash’s team in front 59-58 heading into the 4th quarter, Elie Okobo, Jordan Loyd, Alpha Diallo and Donta Hall all found points to outscore Maccabi 28-8 and take the 19-point win.
With the loss, the yellow-and-blue’s record drops back down to .500 at 13-13 with a Turkish double delight next week as former Maccabi star Scottie Wilbekin returns to Yad Eliyahu with Fenerbahce while a trip to Anadolu EFES is on tap for Friday night in Istanbul.
Wade Baldwin paced Maccabi with 17 points and Bonzie Colson added 17 points in the loss, while Loyd led all scorers with 18 points as Hall and James each scored 12 points in the win.
“They came out really aggressive and we let them play and we lost the game,” Katach said. “It’s tough, we knew it was not going to be easy. We tried to give some few minutes of rest to some of our players but in the end, we lost defensively, I think but both quarters, first and fourth, also offensively, we are not patient enough.”
“This is a great win,” Monaco coach Sasa Obradovic said. “The way we won the game is also amazing, thanks to my players, they did a great job. Defensively, this is how you can dream big, if you play the defense that we played in the second half.”
Jordan Loyd looked back at the win, ”Our mentality, our intensity [changed in the fourth quarter]. I am just super proud because tonight we answered. They made a run in the first half and a lot of times, we put our heads down. Tonight, we really fought and I am really happy for that.”
Roman Sorkin “We had a bad first and fourth quarter, while we came back following half-time. Things got away for us. But we are still in the picture, we will prepare and get ready and win the upcoming games.”
Donatas Motiejunas, Mike James and Jordan Loyd helped Monaco race out to a 19-7 lead to by midway through the first quarter, Lorenzo Brown, Wade Baldwin and Roman Sorkin began to cut the lead but James contnued to score at will while Elie Okobo, Jaron Blossomgame and Donta Hall all scored to give the hosts a 30-17 lead after ten minutes of play.
John Dibartolomeo, Bonzie Colson and Baldwin led the Yellow & Blue on a 10-0 run to pull to within just 3-points, 30-27 with five minutes left in the second quarter. However, Blossomgame and Loyd came back with points, Jalen Adams scored inside and Sorkin dunked but James went from deep to ensure that Sasa Obradovic’s team went into halftime with a 39-36 advantage.
Darrun Hilliard led off the third quarter with a triple, Colson scored and Baldwin dunked, but Okobo and Montiejunas scored to keep Monaco in front 45-43 midway through the third quarter. Baldwin started to heat up with points from the inside and the outside Dibartolomeo also dialed up long distance, Chima Moneke out in a pair of buckets by Brown put Maccabi up 59-58 after thirty minutes of action.
Monaco ripped off a 15-0 run to begin the fourth quarter as Diallo scored on the inside, Loyd and Okobo went from deep and hall scored as well to take a 73-59 lead with 4:42 remaining in regulation time. Hilliard and Colson hit back to back 3-pointers, Okobo and Hall immediately responded while Moneke and Diallo also scored to wrap up the win.
