I hope this is the last column I will write about His Royal Highness, Lebron James until the pre-season. But I am sure it will not be.
I will try to express my feelings- which are very strong -about The King’s decision to go to South Beach, or as he said to take his talents to South Beach.
What exactly does he mean, to “take his talents”? Is he talking about his acting talents? His marketing talents? His personal relationship talents?
I don;t know what talents he is talking about.
Oh hold on, could it be his basketball talents? I forgot about that. I forgot he plays basketball.
Who would have known that. Wait, did he show up for the playoffs? How about those games against Boston? How clued out did he look during that series.
As I write this I am listening to his pal Stuart Scott on ESPN Radio defending the King for his gross misuse of his talents by having a wonderful 1+ hour show to announce his big Decision.
Scott is now saying how great this was by raising so much money for the Boys & Girls clubs.
Do me a favour, please. If he really cared about the Boys & Girls clubs he could have just made a nice donation, told Cavs owner Dan Gilbert thanks for having me, I appreciate you nurturing me for 7 years but I feel I have to try and make a change and move on to a different locale.
Instead, you act like a total moron, jerk, idiot, selfish pig and whatever other adjective you can use to describe him go on national TV with one of the most pathetic interviewers, Jim Gray (see Pete Rose amongst many other interviews) and we all get to hear that he is taking his talents to South beach. AAARRRGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Please stop defending James, he is what is wrong with society today. He is exactly how we should show our children NOT to act like. What a big overpaid, baby, careless & RINGLESS loser.
I have absolutely no problem with how Cleveland owner Dan Gilbert reacted. He expressed exactly the sentiments of every Cavs fan and that is how a caring owner should react. Upset and angry at a former employee who blatantly slapped his team and the city of Cleveland in the face. An employee that did not perform up to his capabilities an employee that he paid millions and millions of dollars to. An employee who let them down in the most important games over the past few years.
And that is why Gilbert is mad.
He is also upset that he will lose millions and millions of dollars. He will lose season ticket sales. He will lose fans. He will be the biggest loser in this decision and he knows it.
And that is why he is rallying his fans around the team and the city. He does have money to try and sign some free agents, but who will come and who is left.
After seeing his reaction will he be able to recruit top flight players. In today’s day and age I am not sure. But what I am sure about is that Miami got a hell of a lot better and Cleveland got a hell of a lot worse.
Shifting over to Miami, sure we don;t want them to win, sure we are upset that they have now become the “evil empire”, but give credit to where credit is due. Pat Riley.
Pat Riley trumped them all again. he trumped LA, he trumped New York. he is the master manipulator and will never ever change.
And as The Sports Rabbi said a couple of months ago when Riley was interviewed during the play offs, he said that he may want to come back with the right mix, i saw that sparkle in that eye. The sparkle that said, I will return to the top yet again and I will find a way to get my team better. I will find a way to get these 3 superstar to play under my roof. Not Cleveland and not New York’s but mine.
And as I said a few weeks ago on the Rusty Mike Radio Sports Show, “You can take it to the bank that Pat Riley will be at Lebron’s door at 12:01am July 1st unveiling his master plan.” And he did just that.
No one believed me when the hot rumors were NY and Chicago and yes I wavered for a moment when Lebron said he was going to have this ridiculous one hour special on TV, thinking that it would be in Cleveland, but once I found out it was not, that was the end of the Cavs.
I am upset. Not that I am a fan of either the Cavs or the Heat, but as a sports fan in general, I am upset. I am sad to see a player so revered to basketball fans make such a farce out of himself. I feel bad that he used a charity to act upon his pompousness. I am sad for the Cavs. I think that Gilbert did the best he could with what he had. The salary cap is not easy to maneuver but the Heat were able to do it to a science. And that is why they are now the team to beat in the East or should i say the whole NBA.
Watch out everyone, the Empire is upon us. Will we have a dynasty that will win year after year or will we see a repeat of the many talent laden Lakers teams of the 1960’s and early 70’s.
Time will tell and that is what is so great about Sports, expect the unexpected.
Shabbat Shalom from Jerusalem
Below is Dan Gilbert’s letter
Dear Cleveland, all of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers supporters wherever you may be tonight;
As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier.
This was announced with a several-day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his “decision” unlike anything ever “witnessed” in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment.
Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us.
The good news is that the ownership team and the rest of the hard-working, loyal, and driven staff over here at your hometown Cavaliers have not betrayed you nor NEVER will betray you.
There is so much more to tell you about the events of the recent past and our more than exciting future. Over the next several days and weeks, we will be communicating much of that to you.
You simply don’t deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal.
You have given so much and deserve so much more.
In the meantime, I want to make one statement to you tonight: “I personally guarantee that the Cleveland Cavaliers will win an NBA Championship before the self-titled former ‘king’ wins one.”
You can take it to the bank.
If you thought we were motivated before tonight to bring the hardware to Cleveland, I can tell you that this shameful display of selfishness and betrayal by one of our very own has shifted our “motivation” to previously unknown and previously never experienced levels.
Some people think they should go to heaven but NOT have to die to get there.
Sorry, but that’s simply not how it works.
This shocking act of disloyalty from our homegrown “chosen one” sends the exact opposite lesson of what we would want our children to learn. And “who” we would want them to grow up to become.
But the good news is that this heartless and callous action can only serve as the antidote to the so-called “curse” on Cleveland, Ohio.
The self-declared former “King” will be taking the “curse” with him down south. And until he does “right” by Cleveland and Ohio, James (and the town where he plays) will unfortunately own this dreaded spell and bad karma.
Just watch.
Sleep well, Cleveland. Tomorrow is a new and much brighter day…
I PROMISE you that our energy, focus, capital, knowledge and experience will be directed at one thing and one thing only:
DELIVERING YOU the championship you have long deserved and is long overdue…
Dan Gilbert
Majority Owner
Cleveland Cavaliers
