Hapoel Jerusalem cruised to a 84-42 win over Hapoel Gilboa Galil to take their quarterfinal series 3-1 and move into the Israel Basketball league semifinals where they will tip-off against Hapoel Holon on Friday afternoon at the Jerusalem Arena. The Galilee squad tried to keep it close early up in Gan Ner as Michael Brisker and Derek Cooke scored but KC Rivers dialled up long distance to lead Yotam Halperin’s team to a 40-23 lead at halftime. Retin Obasohan paced the Reds offense over the course of the second half to help Jerusalem roll to the 42-point victory.
Egbunu and Obasohan each scored 14 points while Rivers added 11 points and Suleiman Braimoh chipped in 9 points in the win. Cooke recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, Michael Brisker added 9 points and Ronnie Harrell scored 7 points in the loss.
Michael Brisker and Derek Cooke each scored a layup for Hapoel Gilboa Galil while KC Rivers put in a 3-point play to get the game underway, Jalen Adams hit a baseline jumper off an inbounds pass, Rivers nailed a corner triple but Ronnie Harrell put down a dunk to keep the hosts close down 8-6 midway through the first quarter. Suleiman Braimoh went from deep, Cooke responded, Rivers dialled up long distance again, Michael Brisker found points, Noam Dovrat checked in with a 3-pointer and Egbunu scored a pair of buckets in the paint to give Yotam Halperin’s team a 25-15 lead after ten minutes of play.
Cooke scored to begin the second quarter while Rivers nailed a triple at the other end, Adam Ariel scored a layup and Retin Obasohan went from deep to keep the Reds in front 32-21 with five minutes remaining in the first half. Cooke scored for Guy Kaplan’s team but Braimoh and Obasohan knocked down 3 pointers as Jerusalem grabbed a 40-23 advantage at halftime.
Itay Segev dunked to start of the third quarter with a bang, Or Cornelius found points, Adams hit a jumper and Obasohan went in for an easy layup the other end as Cooke scored a deuce in tab paint but Jerusalem continued to lead 46-29 midway through the frame. Benayahu Srur scored inside while Brisker scored from the outside, Segev dunked at the other end,
Segev began the fourth quarter as he did the third with points but was sent to the showers soon thereafter with his fifth foul, as did Yotam Hanochi at the other end immediately after he found points, Braimoh scored a 3-point play, Amit Gershon drained his first shot of the game for a corner 3-ball as the Reds went up 65-36 with just over six minutes left in regulation time. Egbunu scored as the respective coaches cleared their benches to take center stage for the final few minutes of the game as Jerusalem eased to the victory.
