In other national team news, the Israel Under-20 Women made history by advancing to the quarterfinals of the European Championships where they ultimately fell to Spain but finished the tournament with a 81-57 win over Turkey to finish in 7th place. This accomplishment marked the highest placement ever for a blue-and-white women’s team which featured four players in double digits throughout the seven games played by head coach Tal Natan’s team. Hila Karsh led the way with 14.6 points, Dorian Dahan added 12.9 points, Emma Rinat checked in with 11 points while Tamar Singer scored 10.4 points for Israel.
“We ended this tournament really well with four wins in Division A which has never happened in Israeli women’s basketball,” Natan said. “Playing in the quarterfinal is not something that our basketball has been used to. A combination of modesty, hard work and fundamentals along with really breaking down the small details turned the national team into a very strong one.”
Also, the Under-16 Boys team evened their record to 1-1 in European Championship group stage round robin play with a convincing 69-51 win over Finland. Yonatan Keller led the way with 19 points and Aviel Mamo added 16 points for head coach Yehu Orland’s squad a day after having been pounded by Spain 116-61. Next up for the young blue-and-white is a date with Germany on Monday.
