Israel Premier League MD33 Recaps & Highlights


Beitar Jerusalem fell to SC Ashdod 3:2 in what was Yossi Benayoun’s last competitive match as an active player. Anthony Varenne gave the host’s a 1-0 lead via a 39th minute header but with a chance to double their advantage as Varenne was pulled down in the box Benayoun missed a penalty twenty minutes later. A 63rd minute own goal put Ashdod on the scoreboard drawing even and just two minutes later Ben Reichert scored from long distance to give the port city side a 2-1 advantage. Dean David sent Sagiv Yehezkel a gorgeous through ball in the 76th minute as Ashdod added an insurance marker. Four minutes later Benayoun worked some of his magic giving Maor Bozaglo a beauty of a pass to cut the lead to 3-2 but that was as close as Beitar would get as Ashdod continued to stave off relegation with one Matchday left in the season.

After 12 seasons in the Premier League, Bnei Sakhnin were relegated to the second division after a 3:0 loss to Hapoel Tel Aviv. Ramzi Sfori was the star of the show bagging a brace and adding as assist on Shahar Hirsch’s injury time strike as Koby Refuah’s side guaranteed another season in Israel’s top league.

Bnei Yehuda handed Maccabi Tel Aviv their first league loss of the season beating the Yellow & Blue 3:2 on a later comeback goal by Fejsal Mulic. Yossi Abuksis’s squad has gotten the better of Vladimir Ivic’s side this season by not only knocking Maccabi out of the State Cup competition but now sending the league champions to their first defeat of the campaign. Dolev Haziza gave visiting Bnei Yehuda a 1-0 lead in the 25th via a header but Yonatan Cohen sent the side’s into the break all even at 1-1 during first half injury time. Dor Peretz gave Maccabi a 2-1 advantage but goals by Dor Jan and Mulic made the difference in the night as the Bnei Yehuda snatched the win and the points.

Maccabi Petah Tikva bested Hapoel Haifa 3:0 but will still need to wait the final Matchday to see of the will remain in the Premier League. Idan Ahardani found the back of the goal early on in the 7th minute to give Petah Tikva a 1-0 lead while Armando Cooper added a second goal in the 26th minute for Guy Luzon’s troops. Tai Baribo scored Petah Tikva’s 3rd goal thanks to a Cooper assist to take the points with destiny in their control heading into next week’s match.

Maccabi Haifa are making a habit of beating Hapoel Beer Sheva this time by a 3:1 score at Sammy Ofer Stadium. Hanan Maman found the back of the goal first for the visitor’s in the 26th minute but 3 unanswered goals by the host’s. Nikita Rukavysta evened up the contest in the 44th minute and Shon Weissman gave the Greens the 2-1 lead in first half injury time with a strike of his own. Five minutes into the second half Weissman once again put the gall behind keeper Ohad Levita for a 3-1 lead and the win.

Maccabi Netanya defeated Hapoel Hadera 2:1 at the Netanya Stadium as they close in on a European qualifying berth. Fatos Beciraj scored for Netanya in the 58th minute beating keeper Austin Ejide. Jahmir Hyka added the second marker twenty minutes later as Hadera pulled a goal back in the 79th minute.

Kiryat Shemona hosted Hapoel Raanana to a goalless draw as the northern side still needs to avoid relegation next week when they visit Bnei Sakhnin.
