Israel comes up short against Belgium, ends U20 Group Stage 1-2

srael came up short to Belgium 70-54 to finish off their round robin group stage in last place and will face Spain in the knockout Round of 16 on Wednesday at 9pm Israel time. The blue-and-white got off to a red hot start thanks to Danny Wolf and Noam Yaacov and took a 19-10 lead.

But Belgium came right back with Tom Di Maria doing serious damage from downtown to grab the advantage by the end of the first frame and never look back to take the victory. With the loss, Head Coach Elad Hasin’s squad saw their record drop to 1-2 in Group A play and will now ready to tipoff against powerhouse Spain.

Wolf paced Israel with 24 points and 9 rebounds, Yaacov scored 12 points, grabbed 7 boards and dished out 8 assists in the loss. Di Maria led the way for Belgium with 19 points as Mennes and Pintelon scored 12 points each in the win.

Danny Wolf scored in bunches for Israel to begin the first quarter, but Belgium came storming back with points by Tom Di Maria and Xander Pintelon to close the period out with a 10-0 run to take a 20-19 lead after ten minutes of play. Di Maria continued to hit his shots from deep while Thijs Ridder began to find points to extend the lead but Noam Yaacov started to find the bottom of the basket and dish out the rock, Wolf continued to score and Ido Harel with a pair of buckets near the end of the second quarter kept the blue-and-white close, down 39-37 at halftime.

Wolf and Yaacov were the go-to-guys once again as the third quarter got underway but Pintelon and Siebe Ledegen scored to keep Belgium in front 52-48 after thirty minutes of action. In the fourth quarter, Belgium continued to bump up the lead with Di Maria’s sharp shooting and Joppe Mennes points to polish off the 16-point victory.
