Israel Basketball Gameday Three Roundup


Hapoel Gilboa/Galil 77-73 Hapoel Jerusalem

In a shocker up north Gilboa/Galil handed Jerusalem a stunning defeat as Jason Siggers with 21 points, Eric Griffin 13 points and Ezequiel Skverer 13pts and 5 assists led the way for the win. The hosts pressured Jerusalem all evening as the capitol city club turned over the ball 23 times in the loss that saw Curtis Jerrells score 18 points and dish out 5 assists, Lior Eliyahu drop 16 points in 20 minutes of action and Yotam Halperin score 14pts, pull down 5 boards and hand out 5 helpers. Amare Stoudemire scored ten points and grabbed 8 rebounds but committed 4 turnovers. Gilboa/Galil played strong, energetic and physical basketball to come away with the win which Head Coach Simone Pianigiani said: “We lost the game because of our turnovers which were caused by a different type of basketball. Lots of contact which you don’t see in Europe. It was unbelievable as to how much contact there was on every possession and we weren’t used to this type of play.”


Maccabi Tel Aviv 81-72 Hapoel Holon

The Yellow & Blue pushed their Israeli league record to 3:0 after winning against Holon at Yad Eliyahu. DJ Seely scored 18 points while Victor Rudd added 15pts and Sylven Landesberg 14pts in the victory. Holon made a run at the start of the 4th quarter to cut Maccabi’s lead to 66-61 by Landesberg drilled a 3-pointer and followed it up with a pair of free throws for the win. Darion Atkins scored 26 points while pulling down 13 rebounds in the loss.


Maccabi Ashdod 70-82 Nahariya

Meir Tapiro’s team feel for the first time this season losing at home by 12 to Nahariya. Yancy Gates starred for the northern team scoring 19pts, pulling down 7 rebounds and handing out 5 assists while Gilbert Brown dropped 18pts and dished out 6 helpers. The visitors played stifling defense causing Ashdod to commit 24 turnovers, six of them by Daniel Ewing (13pts) Adan Ariel led Ashdod with 14pts.


Maccabi Rishon Le’Zion 89-73 Bnei Herzliya

After a close first quarter, Rishon spend up a ten point halftime lead going into the break leading 42-32 after 20 minutes. Anthony Hillard (12pts, 6rbs) Avi Ben Chimol (9pts, 7assists) and and Idan Zalmanson (17pts) led the way for the Orange who will be getting back the services of Shawn Dawson after he was cut from the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans preseason roster. Jeff Adrein (16pts) and Halil Kanacevic tried to keep Bnei Herzliya in the game to no avail. Each team plays a European contest this week with Rishon featuring in the Champions League and Bnei Herzliya the Europe Cup.


Maccabi Kiryat Gat 69-75 Maccabi Haifa

Haifa win their first game of the camping defeating Kiryat Gat in Ashkelon thanks to strong play by Oz Blazer (16pts), Orlando Mendez-Valdez (13pts) while Amit Simhon and Tpny Mitchell added 12 points a piece. Tyshawn Taylor starred for the hosts scoring 25 points in the loss.


Hapoel Eilat 89-72 Hapoel Tel Aviv

Oded Katash’s side picked up the 17 point win against the Reds in the southern most Israeli city thanks to strong play from Landon Milbourne (24pts), veteran guard Afik Nissim (20pts) and Pierria Henry with 8 assists. Adrian Banks led all scorers with 25 points for Hapoel which went down by 17 at the half playing even basketball for the third and fourth quarters.
