Hapoel Holon pulled off a miraculous victory at Pinar Karsiyaka 77-76 as Stefanos Dedas’s squad came all the way back from a double-digit deficit to win in dramatic fashion. Guy Pnini hit a late clutch triple to move Holon in to the lead with assistant coach Amit Sherf on the sidelines after Dedas had been ejected in the third quarter, but Sek Henry took the ball after missing a pair of free throws and nailed a long distance special to pull even at 76-76 with under a second left in the contest.
However, veteran center Semih Erden was called for a technical foul when he crossed the line on Pnini’s inbounds pass allowing Tyrus McGee to score the game winning free throw to shock the Izmir faithful. The victory moves Holon to a 3-1 record in Champions League Playoff Round action with two home games remaining against Brindisi and Tofas.
CJ Harris led Holon with 21 points, Isaiah Miles added 20 points and Tyrus McGee chipped in with 12 points in the win. Amath M’Baye scored 17 points while Tony Taylor and Sek Henry scored 12 points a piece in the loss.
“Congratulations to my players and assistant Amit Sherf, we did it again,” began Dedas following the game. “We were very calm even though we were down we missed open shots, layups and free throws. I told the guys at halftime that we have to go slowly possession by possession to get back into the game. We had some important baskets with contact in the paint which is something we prepared. We beat everybody on the road and that’s a big accomplishment for the team.”
Veteran forward Willy Workman was excited following the game, “This is the type of game you’re going to remember after your career is over being down 15-18 points after the first half. It’s one of the most resilient teams I’ve been on.”
Karsiyaka coach Ufuk Sarica expressed his disappointment after the loss, “This was a difficult and tough game. They are a very good team and won their first two away games. We were good on offense, but the second half we made too many mistakes and we played EFES two days ago. We made a terrible mistake at the end and we now have two more games to play.”
Nusret Yildirim also spoke about the game, “We took control and made simple mistakes and gave them the rhythm and lost the game. We have two more games and we will try to win and move out of the group.”
