Jan 25, 2023 | Holyland Hoops

Hapoel Holon just came up short in France as the purples fell 112-110 to Strasbourg in double overtime to begin the Basketball Champions League Round of 16 Group Stage with a loss. Chris Johnson, Joe Ragland and CJ Harris paced Guy Goodes’s team to a 48-45 lead at halftime but Rodions Kurucs, Marcus Keene and DeAndre Lansdowne were able to knot the game up at 88-88 at the end of regulation.

After a back and forth first extra session, Harris and Ragland opened up a 108-101 lead but a number of unsportsmanlike fouls allowed Luca Banchi’s team the chance to come back and see Lansdowne hit the game winner off of the glass with 5 seconds to go to give the hosts the surprising victory.

A very distraught Goodes spoke about the foul calls near the end of the game, “What happened at the end with the decision to give us 4-5 intentional foul, I usually don’t say anything and I respect the three referees that were here, but it was difficult to play like this and it helped them come back into the game. We made mistakes on defense but it was very tough to play like that.”

“This was a very important win to open the top 16,” Strasbourg coach Luca Banchi began. “This is the level of the group and we came into this with a short rotation but with a great spirit. In the lowest moments of the game we had the structure to come back. These games come down to the small details. The guys were well prepared and made the right choices to tie and then win the game.”

CJ Harris also spoke about the game form his point of view, “They are a good team and we knew it would tough and physical. We didn’t do what we needed to do and we didn’t close out the game. We can’t be mad at anyone other than ourselves. Little mistakes that shouldn’t happen, not concentrating on defense and bad fouls. It was not closing out the game with veteran players and we just have to be better.”

Game MVP DeAndre Lansdowne shared his thoughts on the game, “That’s a tough hard fought game and a great win for our team. We know how tough each team is and the ones in our group. We know that we need to win our home games and steal one of the road. No matter how long it took, this was a good win for our team. Continuing not to give up is our motto. Always having that mentality. This is a team that is resilient and we have each others backs. We used our opportunities that we were given with their unsportsmanlike fouls and we made the free throws. We were able to get back into the game without the clock moving too much.”
