Hapoel Holon ousted from Europe, fall to Petkimspor in BCL Play In series 2-1

Hapoel Holon were eliminated form Basketball Champions League play as they fell to Petkimspor 93-85 in the decisive third game of their Play In series for a place in the Round of 16 group stage. The Purples came out strong as Jalen Adams, Elijah Mitrou-Long and Idan Zalmanson paced Guy Goodes’s team while Wesley Van Beck, Breein Tyree and Jamie Echenique countered for the hosts who led 51-48 at halftime. Damyean Dotson and DeWayne Russell bumped up the lead but Michale Kyser and Yotam Hanochi kept Holon close, however Van Beck and Tyree closed out the game to take the victory.

Adams and Zalmanson scored 15 points each and Mitrou-Long added 13 points in the loss. Echenique scored 18 points, Van Beck put in 16 points and Tyree put in 15 points in the win.

Wesley Van Beck, Breein Tyree and Jamie Echenique scored for Petkimspor while Elijah Mitrou-Long, Jalen Adams and Idan Zalmanson scored to give Hapoel Holon a 27-23 lead after ten minutes of play.

“It’s a complicated situation for us not to play at home and traveling the entire season,” Goodes began. “The last two weeks was unfortunate that we had two injuries of players that we brought in to help us, Brendan Adams who is out for the season and Mike Davis as well so the load was on a lot of players. We fought and they wanted to do a lot of things but it wasn’t enough. We were fatigued we made mistakes.”

“We started in the qualification part of the league and we made it to the Round of 16,” Petkimspor Head Coach Burak Goren said. “I am very proud of what we have done, Holon gave us some tough games and all of the games were very close.”

Idan Zalmanson spoke about the loss, “It was a tough game, one that had a lot of pressure for both teams. We fought hard and played well for part of the game. Petkimspor is a high quality team and we felt it. It was a close series and they won, but I’m proud of the guys. It wasn’t an easy European season not having home court but everyone did their best.”

Wesley Van Beck reflected on the win, “I have to give credit to Holon as they fought hard. It was a game of runs and we made enough plays down the stretch to get the win. Super happy for everyone at the club, this was a great accomplishment for us and super happy to head into the Round of 16.”

DeWayne Russell put in a 3-point play for the hosts as did Iftach Ziv at the other end, Peyton Aldridge nailed a pair of triples, both Yotam Hanochi and Zalmanson scored, Damyean Dotson, Bryson Williams and Echenique all found points, Michale Kyser scored but Tyree put in points at the buzzer to give the Turkish team a win 51-48 advantage at halftime.

Adams and Aldridge traded baskets, Dakarai Tucker nailed a triple, Adams kept scoring, Tyree, Echenique and Dotson all came back with points, Van Beck and Hanochi traded baskets but more points from Russell and Van Beck handed Petkimspor a 72-66 lead after thirty minutes of action.

Russell led off the fourth quarter from downtown, Kyser, Mitrou-Long and Tucker scored to all to within a pair of points 75-73 but Echenique, Tyree and Van Beck quickly bumped up the lead. However, Hanochi, Mitrou-Long and Zalmanson pulled to within 86-83 but that would be as close as the purples would get as they bowed out of European play.
