Double B’s help Maccabi Tel Aviv drop Panathinaikos 85-74

Maccabi Tel Aviv knocked off Panathinaikos 85-74 as the Yellow & Blue moved to 4-1 on the young Euroleague season as Lorenzo Brown and Wade Baldwin combined for 36 points and 15 assists to take the victory.

Oded Katash’s squad saw Baldwin run the offense to perfection in the first quarter while Brown did the same in the second quarter with 14 points to give the hosts a 47-42 lead. Bonzie Colson had the hot hand in the third period while former Maccabi forward Derrick Williams tried to keep the Greek squad close, but Brown found the basket in the final frame to hold onto the victory.

Brown ended the night with 22 points and 9 assists, Baldwin added 14 points and 6 assists while Josh Nebo checked in with 13 points in the win. Williams paced Panathinaikos with 17 points, Mateusz Ponitka added 12 points and Georgios Papgiannis chipped in the 11 points in the loss.

“Defensively we had some good minutes which helped us to score some easy baskets in transition,” Maccabi coach Oded Katash said. “But for some minutes it wasn’t that pretty. We have to play better. It’s always a good situation to improve after a W. We all know that Lorenzo is great. He’s been great for us since he came here. And we are just happy to have him.”

“In the last minutes if the second quarter we made a lot of bad decisions defensively,” Panathinaikos coach Dejan Radinjoc said. “We tried to be competitive in the second half and our defense was better but they took too many offensive rebounds which made it too tough to come back.”

Lorenzo Brown reflected on the game, “I got in a rhythm. My teammates helped me out a lot tonight to get open shots and play the right game of basketball.”

Josh Nebo also spoke about the victory, “It was very important for us to be strong inside because they have a very good frontcourt. So the focus today was to bring our A game. In the second half, we stayed focused. We were up by 5 points at halftime and I feel like we didn’t get comfortable. We stayed locked in and made adjustments.”

Marius Grigonis fed Arturo’s Gudaitis for a dunk for Panathinaikos while Josh Nebo put in a floater for Maccabi Tel Aviv to get the first quarter off and running, but Paris Lee, Derrick Williams and Panagiotis Kalatzakis all went from deep to give the visitors an 11-5 lead midway through tge period. Alex Poythress and Wade Baldwin dunked, the two teamed up for a bucket by the latter, Poythress put down another huge jam off the break, John Dibartolomeo drained a triple and Roman Sorkin dunked to give the Yellow & Blue a 20-17 lead after ten minutes of action.

Lorenzo Brown began the second quarter with a deuce and a triple, Georgios Papagiannis, Eleftherios Mantzoukas and Mateusz Ponitka all found points as the scored was knotted up at 25-25 with five minutes left in the half. Brown hit a floater, Papagiannis went from deep, Baldwin and Brown each put in a 3-point play, while the former picked off an errant pass and the latter put down a dunk and then a floater, Williams went from downtown, but Josh Nebo scored a 3-point play added a dunk and then a put back as Baldwin hit a triple at the halftime buzzer to give Oded Katash’s squad a 47-42 advantage.

Williams and Brown traded baskets to start off the third quarter, Jalen Adams dunked, Williams went from deep and then hit a turnaround jumper over Adams but Bonzie Colson scored his first points of the game with back to back 3-pointers to keep Maccabi in front 61-51 midway through the frame. Papagiannis found points, Colson with the hot hand put in a floater, Brown fed Nebo for an alley-oop, Wolters and Williams scored but the Yellow & Blue stayed ahead 69-59 after thirty minutes of action.

Dibartolomeo opened the fourth quarter with a layup off a steal, Brown added a 3-point play, Poythress put in another dunk, Grigonis countered but Maccabi continued to lead 76-64 with 5:01 left in regulation time. Lee went from beyond the arc, Baldwin scored a pair of baskets, Hollins added one as well as the hosts took the 11-point victory.
