Deni Avdija Scores Season-High 28 Points as Portland Stuns Denver on the Road

The Portland Trail Blazers defeated the Denver Nuggets 118-110 on the road Monday night at on the road improving to 5-1 on the season and moving into third place in the Western Conference standings. Now, it’s time for Sports Rabbi to take a closer look at Deni Avdija’s performance.

Avdija’s Statistics: 34:48 minutes, 28 points, 8/13 on two-pointers, 2/9 from three-point range, 6/9 from the free-throw line, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 turnovers, 3 fouls and minus-7 in plus-minus.

Avdija’s Grade: 9/10

Denver got off to the better start, taking a 31-19 lead at the end of the first quarter before extending its advantage to 14 points during the second period. However, Portland cut the deficit to 8 by halftime and eventually took the lead during the third quarter, which ended with Denver in front 87-85. The fourth quarter belonged to the Trail Blazers, which outscored the Nuggets 33-23 as Avdija helping put the game away.

Overall, it was an excellent performance from Avdija. On the one hand, he endured a stretch of missed three-pointers during the second quarter and at one point was just 1/7 from beyond the arc. His plus-minus was negative and once again he left points at the free-throw line. On the other hand, he attacked the basket with his trademark power, stepped up when it mattered most and delivered a crucial and-one against Nikola Jokic, although he missed the ensuing free throw.

He also dished out a clutch assist to Damian Lillard during crunch time. All five of his assists came in the second half, while his rebounding numbers remained relatively quiet throughout the contest. Despite his struggles from 3-point range, it was encouraging to see Avdija maintain his confidence and continue letting it fly. He attempted 22 shots from the field on his way to a new season-high 28 points.

Portland, led by Avdija and playing without Ja Morant, showed just how seriously it should be taken as a contender near the top of the Western Conference. Even with Jokic (26 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists) and Jamal Murray (35 points) combining for a big night, Denver couldn’t protect its home court.

Portland’s next game will be on the road against the Phoenix Suns in the early hours of Thursday morning (4:00 a.m. Israel time), and we can’t wait.
