Cutting it close: Maccabi downs Real Madrid 86-84 in thriller

Maccabi Tel Aviv slipped by Real Madrid in a thrilling 86-84 victory that went down to the wire as the Yellow & Blue held on for the win. Tyler Dorsey starred with 30 points including the key 3-point play and jumper in the key to move the club’s record to 10-11 on the season.

Madrid came out strong to start the game, but Ioannis Sfairopoulos’s squad used a defensive second quarter to narrow the gap to just one point at halftime. The balance of the game went neck and neck as Dorsey made the difference down the stretch to secure Maccabi’s second win in a row.

Tyler Dorsey led all scorers with 30 points, Othello Hunter added 11 points, while Scottie Wilbekin and Dragan Bender each notched 9 points on the win. Trey Thompkins was Real’s high scorer with 20 points, Walter Tavares scored 15 points and Alberto Albalde chipped in with 13 points in the loss.

Real Madrid’s big man Walter Tavares got to work early on both ends of the floor, Alberto Abalde scored inside, Jeffery Taylor put down a dunk and Trey Thompkins lived up to his name as the visitors raced out to a 11-2 lead to get the first quarter underway as Maccabi Tel Aviv was forced to call timeout.

Dragan Bender, Tyler Dorsey and Scottie Wilbekin each hit a 3-pointer and Ante Zizic found points inside but Carlos Alocen from the outside and Thompkins on the inside. Dorsey went from downtown for a couple of triples however, Abalde and Laprovittola added points from long distance as Pablo Laso’s squad ended the frame with a 33-24 lead after a wild ten minutes of action.

Othello Hunter went up for a dunk, Dorsey added a floater and Oz Blazyer continued to cut the gap down while Dorsey then scored a 3-point play to knot the score up at 33-33 with 7:50 left in the second quarter. Jaycee Carroll and John Dibartolomeo went back and forth with 7 points a piece, while Angelo Caloiaro hit a corner three but Thompkins answered right back as Chris Jones put in points to go into halftime down 46-45.

Zizic started off the third quarter with points inside, Bender scored a 3-pointer and Dorsey added a deuce but Thompkins and Abalde each hit triples as Real stayed in front 55-54 midway through the period. Dorsey with a midrange jumper as Bender once again went from downtown, Hunter and Tavares traded a pair of baskets but Fabien Caseur picked up his first points of the game and Thompkins drilled another triple to take a 66-63 advantage into the final frame.

Elijah Bryant scored his first points of the game with a 3-pointer, grabbed a rebound, took a charge and then sent a perfect alley-oop to Hunter but Thompkins once again scored for Real as they continued to lead 70-68 with 6 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Dorsey nailed a corner triple, Zizic scored in the paint and Wilbekin went from deep to give Maccabi a 76-72 advantage with 3:39 remaining.

Abalde scored a 3-point play and Tavares put in a pair in the paint but free throws by Wilbekin and and jumper by Bryant gave Maccabi a 80-78 lead with a minute to go. Tavares tied the game up with points inside but Dorsey with a 3-point play and a jumper sealed the 86-84 victory for Maccabi.
