Carrington and Hankins lead Jerusalem to win at Hapoel Tel Aviv

Mar 4, 2023 | Holyland Hoops

Hapoel Jerusalem defeated Hapoel Tel Aviv 80-68 as the capital city reds returned to action after the international break with a win. Zach Hankins was a force in the paint early for Aleksandar Dzikic’s team while Khadeen Carrington scored 16 points in the final frame to pull away from the hosts to take the victory.

Carrington led the way with 18 points, Hankins added 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Or Cornelius chipped in with 9 points in the win. Jaylen Hoard paced Hapoel with 14 points while Tomer Ginat and J’Covan Brown scored 11 points each in the loss.

“The only thing that we will remember from this game is that we won,” Dzikic began. “I am not satisfied and they aren’t as well. Before the game I said it would be super hard to have a good game after a two week break due to the FIBA window. I didn’t like our focus, pressure on the ball and our flow. We Have to do something very fast about this.”

“The start of the second half we had minutes that weren’t good and we allowed Cornelius a chance to be free by the bench and that can’t happen,” Danny Franco said. “We allowed them to get easy baskets. Hankins had easy baskets and we had to send him to the line. We weren’t physical enough.”

The MVP Khadeen Carrington looked back at the win, “It felt great and I felt that I hadn’t been playing great lately so it was great to hit some shots late. My teammates kept me motivated. We knew that we weren’t hitting shots but we knew we had to play defense and then our shots started to fall. I feel that we have a good matchup with anyone when we play the right way. Tuesday is a big game and we have to come out and play like we did today and stick to our principles.”

Zach Hankins controlled the paint early on for Hapoel Jerusalem but Xavier Munford and Idan Zalmanson came back with points to take a 19-15 lead by the end of the first quarter. Tomer Ginat and J’Covan Brown both got busy for Danny Franco’s team but Noam Yaacov and Itay Segev kept Aleksandar Dzikic’s team close as the hosts held a 34-32 lead at halftime.

Hankins got busy to begin the third quarter inside while Or Cornelius scored from the outside, Jaylen Hoard and Chinanu Onuaku responded for Tel Aviv but a big deuce by Yaacov kept the capital city squad in front 54-50 after thirty minutes of action. Carrington began to score in bundles both from beyond the arc and inside of it to score 16 of his 18 points in the final frame to help Jerusalem to the double digit win.
