Mareks Mejeris joined Hapoel Jerusalem for the 2022/23 season as the 30-year old will make his Israeli league debut after having played in his home country of Latvia, France, Russia, Italy and Spain.
Last year the forward ended the season with Pesaro, where he made 13 appearances and averaged 7.9 points and 5.9 rebounds. Prior to ending the campaign in Italy, Mejeris played three seasons with Parma in Russia while last yeat he scored 13.8 points and 4.9 boards in the VTB while chalking up 10.2 points and 4.5 rebounds in the VTB.
The Liepaja native has also played for his country over the past decade and has taken part in the last three European Championships.
To learn more about Mejeris, The Sports Rabbi spoke to a number of former teammates as well as a journalist to get the lowdown on the 6”8 forward.
Journalist Matteo Andreani: Good athlete, he knows how to play well in post and he has an excellent technique. He doesn’t “hate” the 3-point shot despite his 207cm, good percentage. Not a super athlete, but very smart tactically, both in offense and defense.
Riga teammates:
Steve Zack: Amazing signing! Very versatile player. Can bring the ball up the court, shoot the 3 and also dunk on your head! Huge matchup problem for other teams when he’s playing with a true 5 because of his size he usually gets advantage posting smaller 4s. On top of that he’s a veteran European who really understands the game of basketball so tactics wise he’s very good! Enjoy watching him play!
Ken Brown: He was my captain when we played together at vef Riga. He is a good guy on and off the floor and he also gave everything he had on the court. Anytime I was at battle I always felt like Mejeris had my back. We had some good conversation and we always let our dogs play together also
Paul Carter: Mareks is a hard worker and nice guy, he was a good teammate and he’s very skilled for his size and position.
Abdul Gaddy: Great player and person. Very athletic and very versatile on the floor. Coach will love him ! He can do a lot and play multiple positions.
Jabril Durham: That’s my guy! Great teammate. Hard worker. Does all the little things. Rebounds just overall teammate. That’s my champion brother! We won championship together!
Clavijo teammate Olaseni ‘Shane’ Lawal: Hard working athlete. Good energy with skill. Can play multiple positions on both ends of the floor.
