Bonzie Colson is Yellow & Blue as the forward joins Maccabi Tel Aviv

Bonzie Colson inked a 2-year deal with Maccabi Tel Aviv as the 6-6 American forward arrives off of a great season with Turkish squad Pinar Karsiyaka. Colson, who is 26, was the MVP and top scorer in the FIBA Basketball Champions League play in 2021 and also finished as one of the top scorers in Turkey’s domestic league this past season.

Colson is a strong and explosive forward who has a ton of confidence in his shot while he also brings toughness on defense, works hard to grab rebounds and is good at spotting the open man. Last season he showed good range with 39.4% from beyond the arc, while also bringing energy and a fighting spirit to the court. In fact, Colson nailed a game winning 3-pointer over Hapoel Jerusalem in BCL play this past season showing how deadly a shooter he can be.

“Bonzie is a versatile combo-forward who can do a little bit of everything – he can impact the game through scoring but is also a tremendous rebounder for his position that covers space very well”, commented Head Coach Oded Katash to the club’s official website. “He is very energetic guy who brings toughness and intensity and is a very communicative person who will fit well in the locker room.”

Bonzie Alexander Colson II who was born in Washington, DC, started his career playing primarily against bigger and taller players but he still managed to find a way to stand out. So much so, that he was offered a scholarship to attend Notre Dame, where he improved his perimeter skills on the offensive side of the ball and in his senior season he averaged 19.7 points and 10.1 rebounds per game.

The 26-year old was not selected in the 2018 NBA Draft, but ended up playing for the Cavaliers’ G-League affiliate, the Canton Charge. In January 2019, he was signed by Milwaukee and played 12 games with the Bucks while later that year he moved to Turkey and played and produced a successful season at Darussafaka where he scored 12.2 points and grabbed 5 rebounds per game.

In 2020/21, Colson joined Strasbourg in France, where he posted 18.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.1 assists in the domestic LNB league. But it was in the BCL where he outdid himself as he claimed the scoring title and MVP honors, averaging 18.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, while leading his team to the semifinals of the competition.

Last summer, he went back to Turkey and signed with Pinar Karsiyaka where Colson scored 14.2 points in continental play, and excelled in the Turkish league by dropping 16.9 points, collecting 7 rebounds per game while shooting 39.4% from deep.
