Beer Sheva stays in title hunt after dramatic win over Maccabi Haifa but overshadowed by postgame brawl

May 1, 2023 | Football

Hapoel Beer Sheva stunned Maccabi Haifa 2-1 thanks to a 95th minute winning header by Mariano Bareiro to help the southern reds pull to within 4-points of the Greens with three games to go in the season. Immediately after the game both teams had physical altercations between one another as a full blown brawl ensued on the pitch.

Omer Atzily put Haifa on the board first in the 12th minute as his attempt glanced off of Beer Sheva defender Eitan Tibi and into the goal but just four minutes later Eugene Ansah found the quick equalizer to level the score at 1-1. As the game looked to be heading to a draw and a posit of the points an oncoming Bareiro slammed a header home behind Josh Cohen to give Elyaniv Barda’s team the shocking victory.

Following the final whistle all hell broke loose as players from both teams went after each other in what looked more like a WWE Battle Royale rather than the end of a terrific and intense soccer game.

“These things shouldn’t happen on a soccer field,” Beer Sheva coach Elyaniv Barda began. “We won a game that was crucial for us and after the winner a lot of emotions came flooding out. I didn’t even know that the goal was 100% approved until I went to talk to the referee in what was a crazy situation.”

“This was one big ‘Balagan’ and it was an embarrassment for both teams,” Barak Bachar said. “I don’t know who did what but this is something that shouldn’t happen between two of the bets teams in the league. There are still three games to go with the title on the line and I don’t want to see things go out of control.”
