So instead, I’ll use this as an opportunity to have a whine about the early tipoff last night. A majority of Maccabi’s home EuroLeague games begin at 21:00, giving people plenty of time to get to the stadium from their jobs and other commitments. Last night, due to the Israeli football national team’s Euro 2024 qualifier which began at 21:45, Maccabi’s game instead began at 19:00. While this time may be great for people to bring their kids, it’s not great for everyone. To make things worse, the national team had a howler, losing away to Switzerland 0-3.

Thankfully for us hoops fans (and for those whose spirits are dampened by the national team’s performance), there will be no more national team games until June.

The Ugly: Confrontations between players and fans

Maccabi was leading by an insurmountable 34 points after three quarters, which made the fans happy and perhaps made them feel comfortable speaking freely to the players on the court. Just before play started in the fourth quarter, some fans said something which clearly displeased Virtus’s Tornike Shengelia (5 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal), who got up from his team’s bench and moved towards the stands to confront the culprits. Luckily, some of his teammates, as well as Maccabi chairman Shimon Mizrahi, came across to help calm down Shengelia and prevent things from escalating.

Toko Shengelia – Photo Credit: Dov Halickman

Earlier on Wednesday, Shengelia himself posted a message on Instagram, indicating that he bears no hard feelings: “It has always been a pleasure to play in Israel, be it with my club or competing against the national team at FIBA competitions..
