Hapoel Jerusalem signed Belgian Retin Obasohan to a two-year deal after playing under new Reds head coach Oren Amiel at Nymburk. The point guard averaged 13.9 points, 5.3 assists and 3.7 rebounds in Champions League action last season for the Czech team helping them advance to the Final 8 of the competition.<\/p>\n

Born in Antwerp, Obasohan attended the University of Alabama between 2011-2016. In his senior season under head coach Avery Johnson, the former San Antonio Spurs guard, he broke out with 17.6 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists to help lead the Crimson Tide. That led to a season in Italy with Avellino followed by stops in Germany, the G-League and finally with Nymburk.

\nAmiel spoke about his first signing at Jerusalem, \u201cOba will bring exactly what the fans will want to see. He\u2019s a winner who brings intensity to both sides of the court and will battle every single night. He is a glue guy who everyone loves.\u201d<\/p>\n

Obasohan spoke exclusively to The Sports Rabbi about what Oren Amiel brings to the table, \u201cTruly to be honest, coach Oren is amazing on many levels. He\u2019s a great man and leader. He cares about his players, fans, front office, he cares about winning. He understands that to achieve great things you need great people and you have to do it together. Playing for him last year was so much fun, and also a big learning year. From him teaching and coaching me on a daily basis. That\u2019s just how he is as a person, to get into the details of how his playing philosophy makes him even that more special is another long text of compliments.\u201d

\nLukas Feldhaus, The Sports Rabbi\u2019s European Expert based in Germany offered his instant reaction to the signing:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

“Retin Obasohan comes out of a strong BCL campaign, where was one of the key factors for Nymburk’s advancing to the quarter finals of the BCL.<\/p>\n

“He is a player who has had some ups and downs over his professional career. After a difficult rookie season in Avellino (Italy), he was the key player for Erfurt in Germany. Erfurt was a very young team with problems within the club’s structure. They were eventually relegated but Obasohan played a very good season averaging about 14 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 turnovers and 2 steals per game. He couldn’t stick to this season afterwards as he had a decent season in the G-League and a mediocre season in Bamberg in the BCL and German BBL. The 2020-2021 campaign with Nymburk has probably been the best season of his career.

\n“He is a player who excels in terms of his athleticism on both ends. He can be a very aggressive on-ball defender with a good knack for getting deflections. On offense he is more of a rhythm player. His lack of consistency in shooting and decision making limited his game in the past.<\/p>\n

“In Bamberg, he also struggled with the way that the roster was built. He would often play alongside two more backcourt players lacking consistency in shooting with Kam Taylor, Paris Lee and Tre’ McLean. Moreover, he came there when the season already started and the constellation with two more dominant playmakers in Paris Lee and Kam Taylor was not ideal for him. <\/p>\n

“In Nymburk, he had the role of being the sixth man. He only started in two games in both BCL and NBL. He is a combo guard who excels in attacking the rim in transition and in half court. His signature move is his right-to-left crossover, which he often uses when rejecting ball screens.

\n“He can fit well to the rather fast play style in the Winner League. I also think that it’s important for him to have some consistency in terms of his environment, which he now has by playing again for coach Oren Amiel. Retin Obasohan is a very special player who does not fit into every system at this point of his career as he is a rhythm player and he needs freedom to play and to make mistakes on occasions. I think that it’s therefore important for him to play for a coach who knows his strength and who can work with him on the things which he could improve. These include, alongside his 3-pt shot, playing a bit more in control, passing the ball more accurately and improving his overall decision making.<\/p>\n

“Obasohan can be a motor and decisive in stretches of a game by hustle plays, tough defense and energetic drives. However, Jerusalem should still be looking for some shooter and a lead point guard who organizes the game a bit more than Obasohan has done so far in his career.”<\/em>
