Hapoel Tel Aviv did what they had to do and what they were expected to do, when they eliminated Maccabi Rishon Le\u2019Zion two games to one after a tough series that really saw Dimitrios Itoudis\u2019s team or remnants of a squad that remained after the Euroleague season tested to the maximum. After falling at home in game one, the reds needed to dig deep, both mentally and physically to take game two on the road and then game three back at Yad Eliyahu with both wins being authored more or less by Vasilije Micic.

\nThe Serbian guard, who was brought in this year on a massive contract, came over as the star of stars after a couple of underwhelming and mostly disappointing seasons in the NBA. But for the most part, Micic had not been the same player that had collected Euroelague championships and MVP awards with Anadolu EFES in the past. <\/p>\n

Instead, it was Elijah Bryant, Dan Oturu, Antonio Blakeney who carried the team to a 6th place finish and a quarterfinal appearance against Real Madrid in their debut season in the continent\u2019s top league.

\nHowever, now Hapoel is without its top three stars with Bryant and Oturu in the United States and Blakeney still rehabbing. With that in mind, someone had to step up and meet the challenge and it was Micic who did just that in a huge, huge way.<\/p>\n

Game two saw the maestro score 18 points and add 6 assists while in game 3 he chalked up 23 points and 7 helpers as Micic asserted his authority on both games and authored the wins. He was dunking, slicing to the bucket, dancing on the floor, hitting from deep as he did as he pleased play after play to secure the series and set up a semifinals against one the club\u2019s poignant foes in Hapoel Jerusalem. <\/p>\n

But and it\u2019s a big but, there are problems and Itoudis is well aware of them as he now prepares his team for battle against Yonatan Alon\u2019s troops. As big as the club\u2019s roster was throughout the season, it\u2019s pared down drastically with players a plenty opting out of being in Israel as well as some on the shelf with injuries.

\nNo Bryant, Colin Malcolm and Tyler Ennis who are hurt. Kessler Edwards and Oturu didn\u2019t return to the Holy Land and while it\u2019s been discussed that Blakeney may get minutes in this series it\u2019s certainly not a done deal or written in stone. Plus he\u2019s been out of the rotation for weeks at this point, he will need to be reintegrated into the squad. <\/p>\n

With Tai Odiase going down in game three with a left arm injury it\u2019s not clear what his status will be, but it seems there is plenty of pessimism amongst the reds that he will be able to play versus Jerusalem. Without Odiase, the club is pressuring Oturu to return to Israel in order for the reds to have a proper front court, but it doesn\u2019t sound like the big man will be coming back anytime soon despite having indicated in the recent past that he would. <\/p>\n

It was just too easy to see Itoudis\u2019s expression when Odiase was clutching his arm in pain and had to go down to the lockerroom for treatment which eventually saw him head to the hospital for tests. The bench boss was flabbergasted and couldn\u2019t believe his bad luck. Following the game it was also easy for all to see and hear how down in the dumps Itoudis was at the press conference.

\nHe seemed defeated and at a loss of words as he contemplated what will be this going week when they will need to find a way to match up against Jerusalem. <\/p>\n

Hapoel still has Levi Randolph and Keandre Cook who they had recently brought in and one of those two will be registered in place of Odiase. Itoudis will need to play small ball for some stretches and go with there guards which has actually been successful for them thus far in the playoffs as Chris Jones, Yam Madar and Micic played at times all together on the court. Not ideal, but anything goes at this time of the year with the one and only goal is to win and win and win. That\u2019s ultimately the name of the game. <\/p>\n

It won\u2019t be a simple task to put together the best matchups for a series with Jerusalem that saw almost every player come back to Israel following the war (although it did take some time and Austin Wiley who took his time to return was out of the last series with an injury) but Itoudis has the experience and the know how to do it.

\nThis series will be fascinating and could be one of those classics that the league so much needs after such a tough season, from the war and them the Israeli players strike, they need a good clash, more than anyone. <\/p>\n

We almost forgot to mention the reigning MVP and back-to-back EuroCup Most Valuable Player in Jared Harper who will no doubt try to out his stamp on the semis for Jerusalem in more ways than one. But Alon has plenty of solid players who can matchup very, very well against Hapoel Tel Aviv. <\/p>\n

Except, Itoudis still has the star or stars on his roster in one Vaisilije Micic and if he continues to play the way he did in these past couple of games, Hapoel Tel Aviv will have as good as a chance than anyone to punch their ticket to the finals.
