With Maccabi Haifa pushing and pushing hard to take the lead over Maccabi Aviv as the second half of their Israel State Cup semifinal clash was all knotted up at 1-1, yellow-and-blue bench boss Ronny Deila decided to make not one, not two but three substitutions.<\/p>\n

The Norwegian didn\u2019t like was he saw on the pitch and decided to totally reenergize his squad in the 56th minute with a trio of new players coming on. In fact, it probably didn\u2019t even matter who those three players were although for the record it was Amir Sahiti, Raz Shlomo and Issuf Sissoko who all entered the fray and injected new life into Maccabi just in the nick of time. <\/p>\n

It just two minutes after the triple sub for Tyrese Asante to head home a Roy Revivo corner kick and give the Deila\u2019s squad the 2-1 advantage leaving the 2,200 Maccabi fans (only 2,200 fans instead of close to 15K due to Home Front Command restrictions still in place due to the ongoing conflict with Hezbollah and Iran), in delirium. From that point on it was away we go as the yellow-and-blue did what they needed to do to in order to record a 3-2 win and advance to the final against arch-rivals Hapoel Beer Sheva slated for May 26th back at Teddy Stadium.

\nAs soon as Deila made that triple substitution, something that Beitar Jerusalem Head Coach Barak Itzhaki did a couple of weeks ago against Ironi Tiberias at the start of the second half when his team was in a 2-0 hole, it was clear to most as to where the game was going to head. <\/p>\n

One person who needed to understand the ramifications was Haifa Head Coach Barak Bachar and he stunningly did nothing to counter the move which ended up costing his team dearly. After the match, the greens bench boss as well as veteran Kenji Gorre spoke about the little things, the small details costing the team in this clash and that was one of them. <\/p>\n

There were certainly others, but in a game that was Haifa\u2019s last gasp chance to take home a piece of hardware this season and prove that the campaign was not a disaster, Bachar was not aggressive enough in his approach compared to Deila, where it was a win and go home contest and moves needed to be made.

\nDeila\u2019s substitution was brave, but not really a gamble as he needed to do something in order to wake his teamup, which it undoubtedly did. Ido Shahar had a chance to give Maccabi a 3-1 lead but his spot kick from 11 meters out soared over the bar and into the yellow-and-blue supporter section but Revivo made good on doubling the advantage prior to closing out the game 3-2. <\/p>\n

In a way both Maccabi Tel Aviv and Maccabi Haifa, participants in the Israeli Classico, mirror one another. <\/p>\n

Both squads made a coaching change over the course of the season, both have underperformed and also have been underwhelming to say the least while struggling game in and game out. There have been issues of consistency since day one of the season and plenty of ups and downs as both clubs have disappointed their fans in one way or another.

\nMaccabi Tel Aviv find themselves in 3rd place and ten points away from Hapoel Beer Sheva who sit atop the table with the ten game Championship Playoffs beginning this Sunday when they face Hapoel Tel Aviv, who they are level on points with 49 each in a Derby matchup. While there are 30 points left in the pot, it will be extremely difficult to overcome a double digit deficit when every week sees the yellow-and-blue and in fact every one of the six teams on the playoffs in a tough contest.<\/p>\n

The yellow-and-blue have had plenty of difficult games this season and up until Wednesday night when they defeated Haifa, they had amazingly only won one game versus a top team, 3-0 over Hapoel in the first Derby of the season. Otherwise, it was a loss and draw against both Beitar and Maccabi Haifa, a pair of defeats at the hands of Beer Sheva and a split with the Reds. <\/p>\n

While there are tons of points available, if recent history is to be repeated, it\u2019s going to be very hard to see where Maccabi will take points in these ten games.

\nFor Maccabi Haifa, top of the table is something that they can only dream about as they are 17 points away from the southern reds. Bachar made it clear that now that they are out of State Cup contention they will need to finish in at least 4th place to ensure European qualification play for the 2026\/27 season. However, that is way easier said than done as they find themselves 7-points away from Hapoel Tel Aviv who are firmly entrenched in 4th place with 42 points.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s no easy task to say the least but Bachar and Gorre are keeping to the party line that there are points to be had and that the goal of 4th place is in reach. <\/p>\n

That\u2019s fairly difficult to believe as there is no reason to think that they will even finish the season in the position that they are currently in with Hapoel Petach Tikva 5-points behind them.

\nWhile it\u2019s unknown how these teams will fare in the playoffs, one thing that is certain is that every single week from here on in until the end of the season, will offer some unbelievable mouthwatering matchups all over the country. <\/p>\n
