This group has incredible mental resilience that you don’t often see. They proved that anything is possible when you want it. Anyone who was there knows we weren’t the most talented team, but we wanted it more than anyone.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

I\u2019m (still) not Ariel Beit Halachmi\u2019s speechwriter. But if EuroBasket 2025 ends the way we hope, aspire and dream it will, Israel\u2019s national team coach will probably already know where to draw inspiration for similar words. These are the same words used by a certain Ariel Beit-Halachmi (start practicing the initials: ABH) after his second consecutive European Championship title with the Israel Under-20 National Team back in 2019, right here in Tel Aviv.<\/p>\n

A lot has happened since then. Individually. As a society. As a world. As a country. As basketball lovers. A lot happened to them as players. A lot happened to him as a coach.<\/p>\n

That summer six years ago, as the mist of champagne floated above the court at Drive-In Arena, we all fantasized about the day when the talent, character and uniqueness of that promising new generation would finally be realized. And how would it be realized? With an impressive and rare achievement by the real Israel National Team, the senior team.<\/p>\n

After the pandemic and before the war, part of that magical group had its first test. It didn\u2019t end well. We said that Deni Avdija was still young and raw and that it was his first big experience. How could you expect a role player in the NBA to become the leading star of the national team? Maybe the veterans didn\u2019t know how to let go and embrace his leadership. And yes, there was talk of cliques – or maybe not. There was no naturalized player. The Basketball Association parted ways with the coach who had led the youth revolution. And overall, the whole event felt doomed from the start.<\/p>\n

In short, it didn\u2019t really work, or more accurately, it really didn\u2019t work. There were 1,001 reasons to explain the failure of 2022. None of them matter right now.<\/p>\n

Avdija is 24 now and no one questions his star power. Yam Madar is his twin, identical, synchronized and suited to him. Khadee=n Carrington is the best naturalized player the national team has had since David Blu. Roman Sorkin is already a proven Euroleague player. Tomer Ginat has branded himself as the classic complementary player. And alongside them, even Yovel Zoosman will have the peace and quiet he needs to create, support and maybe even lead at times.<\/p>\n

Israel last reached the quarterfinals of the EuroBasket 22 years ago and since then has only made it to the round of 16 once, a decade ago. After the astonishing and pride-inducing achievements of the youth teams, this is the opportunity we\u2019ve been waiting and hoping for.<\/p>\n

This mission falls to Beit-Halachmi, who finds himself at a critical crossroads in his career. Since those historic accomplishments with the U-20 squad, he hasn\u2019t really found his footing. Apart from one playoff semifinal appearance with Hapoel Eilat, his five other seasons ended with losing records. He was fired from Hapoel Tel Aviv midseason, also let go by Eilat, relegated with Gilboa\/Galil and barely escaped relegation with Hapoel Afula.<\/p>\n

At 59.5, ABH will become the oldest head coach of Israel\u2019s national team at a EuroBasket tournament. Zvika Sherf and Arik Shivek were both 57+ in their final appearances and Beit Halachmi is making his debut at this age. His chemistry with Avdija and Madar brought him here and it will also determine where he goes next.<\/p>\n

Will the lack of success with his recent club teams affect his performance on the national stage? Not necessarily. Over the years, we\u2019ve seen quite a few coaches thrive only with national teams, as if it\u2019s a completely different profession.<\/p>\n

Pepu Hern\u00e1ndez led Spain\u2019s golden generation without ever being seriously considered for Real Madrid or Barcelona. Igor Koko\u0161kov led Slovenia to a historic title and didn\u2019t even survive a full Euroleague season. Sa\u0161a \u0110or\u0111evi\u0107 became synonymous with Serbia\u2019s national team, without ever settling into a top-tier club. Sergio Scariolo, at 64, is finally getting his late-career chance with Real Madrid, thanks to his national team work, despite years of modest club success. And it\u2019s somewhat similar to what happened a year ago with Gordie Herbert at Bayern Munich, at an age when most of us are thinking about retirement.<\/p>\n

Even if Beit Halachmi doesn\u2019t reach the heights of Hern\u00e1ndez, Koko\u0161kov, \u0110or\u0111evi\u0107, Scariolo, or Herbert, he can certainly belong on that list, in its positive light. He has one of the most promising and exciting rosters in Israeli basketball history and arrives in Poland (and hopefully also Latvia) with a lot to gain – and a lot to lose.<\/p>\n

We won\u2019t dive again into the deep waters of the Tamir Blatt saga. It’s unnecessary and we promise, at least try, not to mention his name in future columns. Mainly because it’s too easy to blame any crisis on a missing player.<\/p>\n

There are no saints here, not the player (or his entourage), who ultimately didn\u2019t show up often enough or take enough of the opportunities he received and clearly signaled that he had no interest in this event. Nor the coach, who made a fatal mistake by making it clear from the start that Blatt wasn’t valued enough.<\/p>\n

At the end of the day, our basketball here in Israel doesn’t have endless depth and it can’t afford to lose a player with four years of Euroleague experience. Especially not when Madar\u2019s physical condition is shaky and no one really knows how he’ll come out of this tournament. And certainly not when even the only other natural point guard on the roster (aside from Yam), Roi Huber, was cut at the last minute.<\/p>\n

ABH is bold and courageous. When a coach stands behind his stars and follows them, he lives or dies by their success. And when he goes against them and leaves them out, he puts himself directly under the spotlight, for all to see. For better and for worse.<\/p>\n

The biggest question mark hovering over this team is the point guard position. And stemming from that, also the position of the coach.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
