It is now being reported that Lebron James will join Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami. Exactly what I had thought from the beginning, but who knows report this and report that it all can change any second before 9pm Eastern tonight.<\/p>\n
I changed my tune yesterday when he announced that he would have this Decision extravaganza live on ESPN, thinking that there is no way he would really stick it to Cleveland and their fans this way, but if the reports are true, he will do just that.<\/p>\n
The more I think about Lebron, the more disgusted I am. What happened to the just going out and playing the game athletes? Where have they gone?<\/p>\n
Do they have to brand themselves day in and day out? The truth of the matter is, that we are to blame by buying into all the hype and all of the action outside of the game itself. We are the fools for wasting our time, an hour in prime time to see an over inflated ego announce his “Decision”. ESPN are the fools for being taken advantage of for LBJ to make his big announcement.\u00a0By even doing this in CT, and if he does indeed go to Miami it will show such Chutzpah to his former employer and their fans.<\/p>\n
In the grand scheme of things, who cares? What really\u00a0matters is what goes on the actual court or field of play.<\/p>\n
Which brings me to an interesting interview I heard yesterday which left me scratching my head.<\/p>\n
Yesterday on JMINTHEAM\u00a0with Nachum\u00a0Segal, the owner of the Newark Bears Thomas Cetnar\u00a0joined\u00a0Nachum to discuss his baseball team in New Jersey.<\/p>\n
Thomas spoke so highly of all the action that can be found at the stadium, including the in between innings activities and the other good fun, such as\u00a0picnics and\u00a0the like that takes\u00a0place during the game itself.<\/p>\n
He then went on to say that no one can sit through a\u00a0while game, his 7 year old daughter wants to do this and that, as well as many of the other children in attendance.<\/p>\n
Well what happened\u00a0to the days of going with our parents and actually sitting\u00a0and watching the actual game? What is wrong with doing what one should be doing at a stadium? Sitting and teaching their children about the intricacies of the game, the patience, the drama, the action, how to keep score?<\/p>\n
Where did those days go? When I went to a game I went for the game. And the same is true with my sons now. When we go to a game, we get to the arena or stadium well before the game begins. We soak in the atmosphere, the pre game practice and all that surrounds the game, not the nonsense that goes on off the playing field or between breaks. When there is a break in the play we usually\u00a0open up the sports section of the newspaper to check out a stat etc…<\/p>\n
Are we not teaching our children properly about sports? Is Lebron James who our children should emulate? Is it all the things that go on outside that is more important than the actual game itself?<\/p>\n
Unfortunately that is where sports is heading these days. It’s the lack of patience and\u00a0the, “I know what I want and I want it now” mentality. The information age, constant changes in action, how often do we find ourselves watching one thing and flicking to another channel and then another and then another. What happened\u00a0to just watching one game?<\/p>\n
And that is what Lebron understands in us. He craves the attention and we are more than happy to give it to him.<\/p>\n
Including this author by writing about his Royal Highness for 2 straight days. We are all guilty.<\/p>\n
However, we need to take that step back and say, hold on, what is really the most important aspect of sports? Is it what happens on the field or off of it.<\/p>\n
The answer is on the field of course. Except what happens off is sometimes the more\u00a0exciting part of being a Sports fan and the Lebron James marketing machine is fuly aware of that fact.<\/p>\n
