What a Super Weekend of Football!
Super Bowl weekend brought out the best in footballing action, not just in Dallas, Texas at the Super Bowl, but all over Europe and especially Israel!
Forget about the Green Bay Packers 31-25 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Great game, yes. Great stars, yes. Great action yes. It was all that one could have hoped for.
You couldn’t have scripted it any better for Aaron Rodgers and his crew. With 3 touchdowns and 304 yards in passing, he has finally, yes finally erased the shadows that Brett Favre has left Packers fans in for the past few years.
The Packers are now Aaron Rodgers team. Enough said.
But, wait, there was all kinds of SUPER football action around the globe the past couple of days, and where to begin!
Last night saw a tremendous SUPER match played at the San Siro Stadium in Milan, pitting reigning champions Inter Milan and AS Roma, two of my favorite teams. What did we see from Serie A? How about 8 goals in a 5-3 thriller in favour of Inter Milan. You could not ask for more.
At 4-1 for Inter Milan after a Samuel Eto’o brace , the 10 man Roma squad marched back to 4-3, but a 90th minute goal by stalwart Esteban Cambiasso sealed the Giallarossi fate this night in Milan, for a 5-3 victory.
Over in Spain, Barcelona continued its winning ways with SUPER 3-0 win over Athletico Madrid. Can anyone stop Lionel Messi? Folks if you don’t know who he is, look him up. How about another 3 goal hat trick performance by the wonder kid! Messi has the potential to be the best ever, yes, you read it correctly, the best footballer ever! Better than even the great Pele.
How can we forget the English Premier League, where a SUPER weekend waited the English faithful. A 3-0 victory for Manchester City and a hat trick by Carlos Tevez (another player you must look up), a 2-1 Manchester Untied defeat at lowly Wolves, or how about a 5-3 win by Everton over Blackpool?
However it doesn’t get better than the SUPER 4-4 draw between Arsenal and Newcastle. Arsenal up 4-0 in the 68th minute saw a once in a lifetime comeback by Newcastle to claim the draw. Unbelievable SUPER action all over the map.
In Israel, The Sports Rabbi had a chance to watch a couple of SUPER games live. Beitar Jerusalem hosted Bnei Yehuda at Teddy Stadium in Jerusalem, where Beitar earned a 1-1 draw with a penalty in the dying minutes of this game. A Super crowd was on hand to support the Captial’s team after a Super 0-0 draw the prior week against league leading Maccabi Haifa.
But it doesn’t get better than the Tel Aviv Derby, matching up Hapoel Tel Aviv and Maccabi Tel Aviv in a bitter battle at Bloomfield Stadium in Tel Aviv/Yaffo.
The two rivals have been at each other throats for years and years and this match was no different with the teams splitting the points after a well played, hard worked 1-1 draw.
If you ever visit Israel, one place any sports fan must go to is Bloomfield, where the players come alive on a beautiful field of play and SUPER fan support that is offered by both sets of fans.
Yellow on one side, red on the other, singing and cheering for not only the 90 minutes of the game, but for the 90 minutes following the match as well.
A who’s who of Israeli celebrities fill the stadium seats, in a tightly contested game with Maccabi coming back in the 2nd half to claim the draw.
Over all a SUPER weekend was had by the sports fan across the globe.
