Ishmail (Ish) Wainwright signed with Hapoel Tel Aviv for the upcoming two seasons. Wainwright, 29, 1.98, who can play both forward positions, has made roughly 130 appearances in the NBA over the last three seasons, primarily with the Phoenix Suns, during which he also played in the G-League.
The American/Ugandan forward previously played with Strasbourg in France where he averaged 11.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and roughly 2 steals in 27 minutes and at Rasta Vechta in Germany he averaged 10.3 points, 5.5 rebounds in 28 minutes. During those two seasons he also played in the FIBA Basketball Champions League.
Wainwright, who was born in the United States but represented the Ugandan national team, played his college ball at Baylor for four years and followed that up by playing one year on the college football team as a tight end but decided not pursue a professional football career after not making the Buffalo Bills final roster.
General manager George Hinas said, “Ish is one of the toughest players a basketball fan can expect to see on the court. He is a true competitor who thinks first of his teammates and not himself, and will do anything to help the team achieve victory.”
Wainwright added after signing with the Reds, “I’m very happy to be a part of this organization. I can’t wait to get on the field, start working with the other members of the team and bring victories to the club and to the amazing fans of Hapoel Tel Aviv.”
