Denmark did as they pleased against Israel as the hosts thrashed the blue-and-white 5-0 in Copenhagen to keep their perfect record intact. Head Coach Willi Ruttensteiner’s squad kept pace with the Danes throughout the first 28 minutes of the match but Yussuf Poulsen roofed a rebound into Ofir Marciano’s goal to give Kasper Hjulmand’s side a 1-0 lead.
Simon Kjaer quickly doubled Denmark’s advantage when he headed home a Daniel Wass free kick while Andreas Skov Olsen polished off a terrific team play with a beautiful left footed volley just ahead of halftime to put the Danes ahead 3-0.
The hosts added insult to injury early on in the second half with another set piece goal delivered by Wass as Thomas Delaney scored via a diving header and Andreas Evald Cornelius nodded in the fifth and final goal off yet another free kick to wrap up a dominant 5-0 win.
“We started off well and played quality soccer for the first 28 minutes and then we gave up a goal that could have been avoided,” Ruttensteiner explained following the game. “Denmark is a top level national team and they will punish you on every mistake. This was a very painful lesson. However, we did take 6 out of 9 points this round and we are in a good place to continue to battle for qualification when we play Scotland and Moldova next month.”
