Coach Obradovic & Fenerbahce: How the mighty have fallen – Barcelona whitewashes Fener 89-63

Fenerbahce came into the game against Barcelona looking to regain some of its luster after starting the season 2-6 and a prime time game with one of the world’s biggest sports clubs. Coach Zeljko Obradovic has melted down on a number of occasions this year, most recently last week when he was caught on tv during a timeout ripping Italian star Gigi Datome to pieces saying some not too nice words, including the variety where your mother would have threatened to wash out your mouth with soap.

Obradovic is losing it clearly and understandably as well. His players can’t to what he wants them to do, plain and simple. They can’t score, they can’t play defense, well they can’t do much of anything right and that was on full display in the first quarter as Cory Higgins who came over to Barca from Euroleague champions CSKA over the summer sliced and diced Fener up for 13 points to give the hosts a 25-15 lead after ten minutes of action.

Fener were playing without both Nando De Colo and Leo Westermann to make matters even worse for Obradovic and he certainly wasn’t happy when Nikola Kalinic picked up his third foul of the game with 8:23 left in the 2nd (!) quarter to pile on the problems gene more. Higgins was quite in quarter number two but that allowed Adam Hanga to shine.

The Budapest, Hungary native slammed home a big dunk and followed that up with a triple to end the half with 7 points for Svetislav Pešić’s team. On the other side of the court you know Fener is in trouble when their first half top scorers are Jeffrey Lauvergne, Ahmet Duverioglu and Melih Mahmutoglu as Barca took a 44-30 lead into the lockerroom and held the Istanbul based team to just 15 points per quarter.

Alex Abrines drilled a triple to open the half as things went from bad to worse for Obradovic. The opening 3-pointer was just the bell being run to begin the third quarter as Higgins continued to pile on the misery one basket after the next while Fenerbahce missed field goal after field goal and free throw after free throw. Think about these stats, after thirty minutes of action, we’ll action by at least one team, Derrick Williams and Gigi Datome have ZERO points combined, Kalinic has two, and Vesely four. Can you believe that? Barcelona takes a 67-40 lead into the final frame as garbage time galore awaits.

Vladimir Stimac finally made his first appearance of the game to start the fourth quarter and he apparently didn’t get the garbage time memo as the big man scored four quick points to he’ll give a bit of life into a lifeless Fenerbahce carcass. Neither did Datome as the Italian stallion began to find the bottom of the basket with 7 points over the first half of the frame but Kyle Kuric and Abrines drained their shots from long distance and Brandon Davies put down a monster jam and even Abrines went up to show his stuffing powers before ending the game with another trifecta to put a bow on a 26 point, 89-63 victory. Oh how the mighty have fallen.
