The Sports Rabbi Show March 7, 2012

In a story that has captivated the world, Robert M. Beren Academy in Houston’s Rabbi, Avi Pollack joined The Sports Rabbi to breakdown what went on in the Orthodox day school and the basketball world this past week.

Beren Basketball Team

By making the statement that Shabbat & G-d are more important than a basketball game, the Beren Academy made worldwide headlines by deciding to withdraw from the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools, TAPPS tournament when their semi-finals and finals matches were scheduled for Friday night and Saturday afternoon.

The story which was covered by the New York Times and ESPN ended happily in the fact that TAPPS finally acquiesced and changed the times of the games which allowed Beren Academy to make to the finals where they eventually lost. Join me for this great interview where Rabbi Avi Pollak explains the school’s stance and how a great sanctification of G-d’s name was made!

Ornit Schwartz

Next on tap was Ornit Schwartz (21:39) who graced The Sports Rabbi Radio Network airwaves and talked about her fabulous career as one of Israel’s finest female basketball players! Ornit played for many teams in the Israeli league and returned this past season after winning the treble-3 championships, one of which was the ULEB European Cup for Elitzur Ramle.

Ornit Schwartz

Ornit retired following the season and is now working with the youth of Ramle encouraging participation in sports which gives one a healthy outlook and a healthy life. Ornit is so enthusiastic about her work and I encourage all of you to be in touch with Ornit via Facebook and see how you can help her as well!

Alex Tyus

Alex Tyus (52:00) of Maccabi Ashdod Basketball joined The Sports Rabbi next as we discussed his 1st year in the Israeli league after coming to the Holy Land from the University of Florida where he was a standout player. We talked about how he has adjusted to his life here in Israel and we also bring up the subject of the Israel National Team as a possibility for Alex down the road.

Rajon Rondo or Deron Williams?

Of course Jon Scheiman (1:02:46) of True Hoops NY broke down the lastest in the NBA as we focused on Rajon Rondo and Deron Williams fantastic games this past week in his most recent post “Performance Pick’em”.

We also talk about the great point guards, including Chris Paul and Derrick Rose along with analyzing Kobe Bryant’s man on a mission match against the Miami Heat LeBron James and Dwayne Wade.

Yoav Ziv in Action-Courtesy of Maccabi Tel Aviv

Allon Sinai (1:32:34) of The Jerusalem Post and Jpost.com joined me to talk about the huge derby match this past Monday between Maccabi and Hapoel Tel Aviv. Unfortunately, the heated battle on the pitch where Maccabi (1-0) finally after 4 years won a match against Hapoel, was nothing compared to the battle off the pitch.

Hapoel Tel Aviv Fans

We saw flares being thrown by Hapoel fans into the Maccabi stands and injuring a young woman. We saw Hapoel fans throwing almost everything including the kitchen sink at the referees and security personnel. We saw 2 Hapoel players after being ejected run back onto the field to attack the referee when the final whistle sounded. And we saw a fan jump on the field wanting to let referee Menashe Mashiach know exactly how she felt about his calls. Not what you wanted to see at a soccer game in Israel, and we break it all down.

Flare thrown by Hapoel Tel Aviv fans in Maccabi's section

In addtion, Allon has a wonderful new piece at Jpost.com about Ali Khatib entitled, “Rising star causes Palestinian-Israeli soccer conflict”. So make sure to check Allon out!

Sidney Crosby

To close out the show, Doc Ike (1:53:08) took a look at the big stories in the NHL this week. Of course the biggest is Sidney Crosby being cleared for contact and Randy Carlyle taking over the coaching reins from Ron Wilson in Toronto.

The Montreal Canadiens were also the topic de jour as they languish in last place and hope to get a good draft pick to begin rebuilding into what was once a proud and successful franchise.

Pulpit Podcast: America Israel Racing!

Right click here to download the Pulpit Podcast: America Israel Racing!

This past week I had the great honor and pleasure to welcome Rich Shirey of America Israel Racing a new NASCAR team who will be taking the message of “United We Stand” to the Daytona 500 this coming week in Florida!

America Israel Racing or AIR was formed to promote awareness of and support by Americans for Israel, the only true democracy in the Middle East. They hope to educate Americans on the importance the United States’ relationship with Israel through exposure provided by one of the largest spectator sports in the world! With the support of like-minded individuals, AIR will spread its message of American Israeli support throughout the entire 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and beyond!

America Israel Racing Car #49

With Rich’s partner at AIR, Mark MacCaull along with Robinson-Blakeney Racing, Driver J.J. Yeley, and Crew Chief Tony Furr, America Israel Racing brings the Best of the Best to the greatest speedway in the world!

This in my opinion is one of the great Kiddush Hashem’s or Sanctification of G-d’s name that can be done. To be able to publicize solidarity between America, the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave, and Israel, the Land that G-d promised to the Jewish people, the Land of Milk & Honey, there can be no greater way to show the ties that bond these two great democracies and two great people.

As a long time NASCAR fan when I learned about America Israel Racing I went wild! Finally a real team to root for. Yes, I like to watch Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson with their sponsors race around the track, however, Dupont and Lowe’s just doesn’t mean the same as America & Israel.

Think about it. I team created by two fine individuals for the sole purpose of showing togetherness, Yachad as they say in Hebrew, United we Stand. Can it get any better than this?

America Israel Racing has some important hurdles to overcome there is no denying that. Firstly they will attempt to qualify for the Big race this Sunday February 19th. Then it’s on to the Gatorade Duels on Thursday February 23rd, and then if they qualify as there are only 43 spots in the Daytona 500 and 49 cars are attempting to make it in, they will make it to the race on Sunday February 26th! So it’s a ways to go.

The other issue is funding. The team has put together enough money to run the next race or two, but then after that it will be wait and see if the capital comes in. Obviously good performances during Speed Weeks at Daytona will be crucial in continuing the operation and their hope is that veteran driver JJ Yeley will be able to bring that car to a good finish and Victory Lane! It would be no sweeter than that.

Car #49 America Israel Racing

So if you live in Israel, are a supporter of Israel, or you live in America and support the great friendship between these two great nations, then America Israel Racing is for you!

Make sure to check out America Israel Racing on Facebook and Twitter and better yet next week at Daytona!

We also talked about the reigning Stanley Cup Champions Boston Bruins and how they have added to their already solid fan base, and discussed the Boston Celtics and how they have become somewhat of a footnote because of the lockout.

And a conversation with Jerry would never be complete without mentioning the Boston Red Sox and what they have in store for MLB this coming season!

Jon Scheiman (60:50) from True Hoops NY joined The Sports Rabbi and gave us the lowdown about his trip to The Big Easy, New Orleans where he had the opportunity to not only see the Hornets take on the Phoenix Suns and Steve Nash, he had the opportunity to speak with one-on-one to the great one himself Steve Nash after putting up 30 points & 10 assists while breaking the Suns franchise record for assists formerly held by Kevin Johnson.
