Guess who’s coming to Dinner? Ronaldo or Barack Obama

Wednesday will bring arguably two of the most popular and famous people in the world to Israel the Holy Land, Portuguese and Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo and the President of the United States of America Barack Obama.

The common links between these two superstars are fame and fortune, one providing entertainment on the football pitch, the other in the Oval Office.

If I were to choose whom I would rather meet, I would be left with a tough choice. On one hand here is the President, one of the most powerful people on the face of the planet. The other, a star that can do things with a football that only a few chosen athletes can and will ever be able to do.

Ronaldo began his rise to stardom at one of the most famous sports franchises in the world, Manchester United. He plied his trade well in England and became a fan favorite bringing home Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy and ascended to upper echelons of sports fame on the grand stage.

Cristiano Ronaldo Cristiano Ronaldo

His career then moved on to Real Madrid, another one of the most storied franchises in sports history. On the Spanish stage he can now be compared and contrasted to his alter ego on the pitch, Argentinian superstar Leo Messi of Barcelona.

Under coach Jose Mourinho he is expanding his horizons and is in the hunt for another Champions League title, but his arrival in Israel is with the Portuguese National team will put him to the test as to where he can take this team not as talented as his current and former club teams. Nonetheless he leads a Portugal team that has its own stars who can handle to pressure on the pitch and produce results.

Barack Obama will make his first trip to Israel as President of the United States for a three day affair visiting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Shimon Peres and of course taking in various sites such as Yad Vashem and Har Herzl.

President Barack Obama President Barack Obama

The President of the free world will be discussing world threats from Iran, their nuclear program and other surrounding issues in hostile and non hostile Arab & Muslim states that encompass the only democracy in the Middle East.

He will visit Ramallah & Bethlehem, meet with officials representing the Arabs who live in Israel and try to restart the so called peace process. Obama will even visit my neighborhood as I live right by the US Consulate and he’ll smile for the cameras, talk at the convention center, and see what needs to be seen like every tourist that visits this beautiful country.

But for me the differences are very blunt.

I do not know Barack Obama other than what I have seen over the past 5 years or so of him. He began his career in civil service as a relative unknown with a shady background. Questions about his birth place have dogged him since entering the race for President back in 2007-2008.

Nor do I understand what his policy on Israel & the Middle East really is, nor do I know what his long term plans for the betterment of the United States is. “Yes We Can” & “Change” are very nice slogans that have captured part of the American public, and enough to give him a second term in office, but let’s face it, do I really want to sit down with him for dinner to try and find out what makes him tick? Is he truly the only decision maker on United States policy?

I do however know a bit more about Cristiano Ronaldo and much better than I know Barack Obama. I have followed his career over the past decade since his arrival at Old Trafford as a young 18 year old and I have seen him grow as an athlete and as an individual in his life as a footballer. And I do know what he is planning to do on his trip to Israel. Play in a World Cup Qualifier against my country Israel and attempt to use his magic to send his team further into the tournament.

I am a Sports fan first and foremost, I am The Sports Rabbi, I can only see myself sitting with one person for dinner, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Round 22 Israel Football Ligat Ha’Al Beitar Jeruasalem 2-2 Bnei Sakhnin

Though not the “Match of the Week” for Round 22, Beitar Jerusalem vs. Bnei Sakhnin made for plenty of entertaining theatre as the home side has been under intense scrutiny & pressure since signing two Chechnyan Muslim players in Zaur Sadayev & Dzhabrail Kadiyev. With protests going on outside and inside the stadium there was still a match to be played which ended up being the tale of two halves. The first half dominated by Bnei Sakhnin, the second by Beitar Jerusalem.

But of course the game was surrounded by the game of politics, racism & violence. Everyone was wondering what was going to happen tonight? Would there be protests? Would there be any crazy chants from the fans in attendance? If Kadiyev came on to play what would the reaction be? I believe we received all of the answers to the questions above.

At 6pm outside the stadium a group of 100 or so people heard from Abas Suan, Zohir Balloul and a variety of others that racism can be defeated. While inside the stadium the much embattled East Stand fans separated to other stadium stands as theirs had been closed by the Israel Football Association for the next 5 matches.

The fans supporting Beitar Jerusalem and its actions by bringing in the two Chechnyan players and fans against racism made their way to the North Stand right behind the goal or the West Stand. The North West Stand held those still protesting and upset at owner Arkady Gaydamak and management for the decision that may forever change the composition of their club. And they let everyone know it as well, with Anti-Gaydamak chants and whistling every time Kadiyev touched the ball while warming up at the half and when he was on the pitch when he came on as a substitute in the 79th minute. However the standing ovation he received far outweighed those catcalls showing that the majority of Beitar Jerusalem fans are supportive of management’s decision and were a vocal majority on this historic evening.

There was a dog and pony show around the press box and club suites as journalists from around the world including Germany, France, Belgium & Holland took up positions in a very foreign place for many of them, at a football match.

Beitar Jerusalem owner Arkady Gaydamak

The suites welcomed the Sports & Culture Minister, Member of Knesset Limor Livnat, IFA head Avi Luzon, Beitar owner Arkady Gaydamak, Kadiyev’s mother who was flown in by ownership to support her son on and off of the field.

Dzhabrail Kadiyev's mother made her way to Jerusalem to support her son!

The match started off with the playing of Hatikva, Israel’s National Anthem to which the Bnei Sakhnin fans booed and the club will now stand before the IFA court because of that. On the pitch Jerusalem looked flat and edgy as Bnei Sakhnin and Mohamd Kalebat took full advantage and gave their travelling fans something to cheer about going into half time with a 2-0 lead on Khalibat’s pair of goals in the 27th & 37th minutes. As always Haled Halaula was instrumental in helping the visiting side take the lead as he produced dangerous runs down the side and up the middle of the pitch.

The second half was a totally different story with Beitar Jerusalem dominating & dictating the course of play scoring a couple of goals, one by Eran Levi on an incredible run and then strike in the 71st minute and Steven Cohen’s goal in the 85th minute to earn the home side a well deserved draw.

Nir Barkat, Jerusalem's Mayor!

With Mayor Nir Barkat in attendance along with foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman one can only look at this as not only a victory on the pitch but a victory for Jerusalem, a victory for Israel and a victory for Israel on the international stage. Beitar Jerusalem fans spoke loud and clear last night as to exactly how they felt about having Muslims playing side by side Jews and other nationalities, religions and races.

I believe that former Israel National team player Abas Suan said it best when I interviewed him after the match last night.

I think we all hope that the changes continue and that Chairman Yitzik Korenfine continues his battle against racism & violence, one that is not easy, but one that must forge on. But we also have to understand that other teams have to be held to the same standard as Beitar including their opponent last evening, Bnei Sakhnin.
